Default Ship destroyed by a unarmed freighter!

I recently got SH4 Gold Edition and have been playing for a while. I have TMO and RSRD. Twice now I've spotted a lone freighter in really bad weather, so bad that I can't see the ship til I'm practically on it, so torps won't work. (I think.)

So I proceed to blast it with my deck gun. As soon I get the message that the ship is going down, my sub takes a ton of damage, literally everyone is killed and everything is destroyed.

I can only think of two things, either I got hit by debris from the freighter, or it's a bug.

Sadly, my save game is a few 100nm back.
Anyone experience this or know how to fix it?
Thanks

Tho it's never happened to me, I understand that being to close to a ship that has big secondary explosions will sink you. It's not a bug.

it happened a lot of times to me, i havent learned anything from those encounters it was always repeated to me during those bad weather...

one it didn't destroy the boat completely, it just happens they clipped my rudder and i'm stuck with just forward and reverse hell no turning, and my my bow was pointing for Truk islands in 43'

What is really cool is when it sinks another ship. I had a DD headed my way, but had to stop for a ship crossing in front of it, which I had just launched a couple torpedos to finish it off (it had one hit already) The DD waited for it to cross, but the torps hit and the ship started burning and then when it exploded it took the DD with it.
