My own friendly fire incident......

Well, it finally happened. I sank one of our own ships.

July 1940

U-123 was traveling up the Norwegian coast and having sunk two norwegian ships already sighted another ship near Bergen. We closed to within 8000 mtrs and submerged for a close in torpedo attack. Checked her flag several times as she closed. Red field with white cross..... Definately Norwegian..... Now at 1100 mtrs... Fire one! Scope up! Wait, is that a? No!!!! A swastika in the center of the 'white' cross! Emergency surface! Too late. A column of water and fire dead amidships. We linger to take on survivors and report the incident to BDU. We suspend our patrol and proceed with survivors to port of Stavanger(sp).

It seemed like it was going to be such a nice day this morning.....

Maybe it was an allied ship hoisting a German flag :rotfl:

I remember my first friendly fire incident.

I was well into the St. Georges Canal patrolling about looking for some merchants at the choke point on a particularly unproductive patrol.

Then in the night on the horizon i spotted 3 destroyers traveling in column from West to East.

These guys were moving along at about 5kts... looked sneaky, looked like they were up to something.

I plotted a solution and let 3 fish go at them.

first ship in the column missed astern.

second ship in the column - dud torpedo.

third ship in the column direct hit.

she never sunk, but slowed to about 2 knots and her decks were nearly awash as the deck was now more or less the water line

i closed the range when the other two destroyers left the area and peered through the scope to check on the sinking progress and line up a shot to finish her off.

while inputting my solition - i saw the flag - she was a german ship.

But why were they so deep into enemy home waters... i mean we were 30KM off shore!! well into the St. Georges Canal!

not wanting to be pegged with her sinking, i left the area at high speed while she was still afloat.

Lesson learned: always check the flags, and when in doubt - hold your fire

Reminds me of the one and only time I tried to sail to the far east in an IXB.

Spent (game) weeks (a good few real days) going around the cape and up the east coast of Africa. Fired at lots of opportune targets on the way so was running low on eels, although my fuel management had been good, so I could have made it all the way to Penang if I wanted too. Never fear, I think to myself, I'll stop off at the resupply ship near Madagascar and stock up, so I can have fun on the rest of the voyage up.

Plotted a course, arrived in the area, but nothing to be found for hours. Never fear I think to myself, I've been in such situations before in the atlantic. I start a circular search pattern gradually extending outwards from the map point dot of its approx position.

Still nothing.

Damn scuttlebutting REMF I think to myself... and as I'm a fair radius away from the map point again, I submerge and listen on the hydro's for a while...heading back towards its approx position. Within a few minutes Herr Sonar calls out a contact BEHIND us, moving perpendicular. So I upscope...check it out, and there eventually in the hazy distance is a rather large tanker. Reddish flag fluttering.

Fancy that, I think to myself...a lone british tanker all the way out here...he has NO IDEA that less then a few miles away somewhere theres a german resupply ship.

Close to 4000m. Fire my last two eels. Watch her go down fairly quickly, before resuming my original search again, heading back towards the approx position on the map.

I search in vain for the next 24 game hours, before I realise what I've done.

Look, I didn't do it...nobody saw me do it...you can't prove anything!

I happened to inform the crew that we had, once again, brought the war on the high seas home to tommy...and to CELEBRATE in style, we were going to sail STRAIGHT to Penang for the beer and hammocks...as fast as possible!

I sank a US Troopship last night as it opened fire on me so naturally i sank it leaving the Hospital ship it was with alone, but looking at the chart it seems i have been credited with the death of a Neutral vessel!
