Hi All,

My guess: some problems with hardware or drivers (update required). But I'm not sure, never seen this problem before. Maybe your laptop is overheating?

Is it on all screens or just the sonar?

If its just on that screen try running decompress in the kilo interface folder to extract the sonarBB graphics and see if the image itself has those lines on it.

It looks more like memory corruption (sonar data for display), rather than image corruption.

Thanks for the replies so far. I don't believe that it is overheating or memory corruption as lots of other games work fine. Everthing from "Theatre of War" to "Lego Star Wars", "Silent Hunter 4", "Steel Beasts", "Call of Duty 2" and "Sid Meier's Pirates". The problem only occurs with "Dangerous Waters" and "Sub Command" so my guess is that it must be something specific to the Sonalysts games or at least the way the Sonalyst's game interact with the graphics driver or graphics chip.

Does anyone have either "Sub Command" or "Dangerous Waters" working with an ATI 5870 Mobility Radeon?

Any suggestions for things to try are welcome. I've downloaded and tried every ATI graphics driver from 10.9 to 11.3 and the problem occurs with all of them.

Where can I get "decompress"? I'd like to try TLAM Strikes suggestion to see if that helps.

Thanks again,
Zakarpatska

PS - I should mention that most screens in Dangerous waters work fine. The problem occurs only on a few screens, but unfortunately the Broadband screen is one of them.

I don't know if it is significant, but I have the original version of "Dangerous Waters" that I ordered from the "Battlefront" web site.

Thanks,

Thanks TLAM Strike.

I'm not sure how to use decompress.exe.

I ran "decompress.exe *.ndx" in the "Sonalysts Combat Simulations\Dangerous Waters\Interfaces\Kilo" directory, but I'm not sure it did anything. It did not generate any new files that I could tell.

For example I ran "decompress.exe" on the "SonarSSP.ndx" file:

C:\Games\Sonalysts Combat Simulations\Dangerous Waters\Interfaces\Kilo>c:\bin\decompress.exe SonarSSP.ndx

C:\Games\Sonalysts Combat Simulations\Dangerous Waters\Interfaces\Kilo>dir SonarSSP.*
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 1647-1A7B

Directory of C:\Games\Sonalysts Combat Simulations\Dangerous Waters\Interfaces\Kilo

27/01/2005 02:35 PM 98,304 SonarSSP.dll
17/02/2004 01:04 PM 1,629,679 SonarSSP.grp
17/02/2004 01:04 PM 800 SonarSSP.ndx
3 File(s) 1,728,783 bytes
0 Dir(s) 155,137,757,184 bytes free

Am I doing something wrong? Also is there a way I could load up the game graphics in MS Paint so that I could have a look at them?

I apologize for being so dense.

Thanks again for your help,
Zakarpatska

Is there a modding FAQ? I'd be interested to know how the .ndx, .grp and .dll files relate to each other. Thanks, Zakarpatska

make a .bat file with the following line:

decompress SonarBB

save and run in the kilo interface folder with decompress.exe in that folder too. a new folder will be created with the .bmps for the interface. If one is bad let me know and I'll send you the correct one.

Thanks again TLAM Strike.

I decompressed the SonarBB BMPs and they all look fine when I look at them with MS Paint so the bitmaps themselves don't appear to be the issue. It must be the drivers for the graphics chip or the graphics chip itself.

It looks like the BMPs are 24 bits per pixel. My understanding is that DW is rendered in 16 bits per pixel so maybe the issue happens when the BMP is converted from 24 bpp to 16 bpp - a bad sub-pixel offset or something like that.

Is it possible to recombine the decompressed BMPs back into the original files? I wanted to try playing around with the BMPs and be able to see the effects.

I really appreciate the help you've provided so far.

Perhaps the problem is A.I. Catalyst setting in ATI drivers. It is known to cause problems, so try disabling it.

Thanks Krabb.

I tried disabling the Catalyst AI and setting all of the gaming options to "application selected" but I still see the problem.

I also sent some "Catalyst Crew Feedback" on this issue, but I can't imagine that they will spend a lot of time fixing issues for an old game that was never a great commercial success.

If anyone else has any additional suggestions I'd love to hear them. In any case this should be a warning to everyone to stay away from the Mobility Radeon 5800 series if they want to play "Dangerous Waters" or "Sub Command".

Thanks,
Zakarpatska

Exact same problem here on my lappy. ATI 6370M and Core i7.

Sucks. I'm living overseas right now and only have my lappy. I just downloaded DW from Steam.
