The "Backspace Key" is for re-setting time compression back to X 1.. To pause the game, use the escape key or numpad "-" until you arrive at pause. You can also use the - or + buttons near the digital clock in the bottom right hand screen to do this. This should work with any version of the game.

Depends on the mod. Keeping in mind that, if you re-map the "Backspace" key, you will also need to re-map the function originally assigned to that key by the modder.

Ciao.

In Stock version, Backspace is the Pause Key unless you or a mod has tempered with the files (not that I discourage that, it s great fun).

If you look into the /SH4-Game Folder/Data/CFG/Main.cfg you can adjust the Time Compression for given circumstances (i.e. bring the game to stop via the Pause Key).
Some people think it unrealistic and therefore unfavorable to hold the world in a freeze a.k.a. TC x0; but that is totally up to your taste.

P.S. Don't worry a simple TextEditing tool e.g. Notepad works fine for modifications. BUT DONT FORGET TO BACKUP

Trigger Maru started the trend to remapping the backspace key to 1x instead of 0x. The reason for it is that 1x is the logical thing you want to go to in a single keystroke from your 4096 cruise. Originally you had to bring the game to a grinding stop and hit the + to get back to 1x. Now with TMO when you want to do what you normally need to do you just mash backspace and you're at 1x. If you really want to pause the game you only have to press - and you're at 0x.

It was strictly a case of wanting to do in one keystroke what the player would want to do the vast majority of the time. Ducimus was right too.

Shows to go ya, how long it's been since I've played stock! I've played TMO since it was called "Flavored to Taste" and never knew that backspace was originally the pause button. My appologies, thanks for correcting me.
