Default CTD discussion thread

How frequently do you get CTD's on your career ? Compare it in Vanilla SH3 and with GWX 3.

How do you think what does actually costs them to happen in your opinion ?

Do you think SH3 system platform might be naturely not stable enough and is keen to CTD ?

Your advices on how to lower to minimum CTD cases ?

One piece of advice I've learned: don't scroll your nav map over western Russia. CTD every single time.

I get one occasionally. It used to be when I'd sink a ship, and seemed to be sound related. I avoided it by saving just before I went into action. I haven't had a problem since I got my new sound card. I still get a CTD on rare occasions, and I think this time it's graphics. My card is cheap, and stutters a lot with some of the mods I use, and crashes when I try to use any of the 'damage' mods.

I'm looking into a new card, but then I'm also looking into a whole new computer.

I sometimes get one that is truly random, but "sometimes" is once every month or less, so it's not something I worry about.

As to SH3 being prone to crashing, you might well be right. I would describe it as "touchy" or "finicky". SH4 is supposed to be a lot more stable.

I had a run of CTD's a while ago, and I was all over the place trying to figure them out. Finally discovered it was because I had Variable Renown enabled for SH3 Commander. Took it out and all was good... Except for the 2 careers I lost reinstalling.

Only other one I've had so far came yesterday, and I think it was because I was running SH3 and eleventy billion other tasks on my PC at the same time. When I tried to alt-tab back into SH3, Alaaarm! Was all setup for a convoy attack too.

Steve is right. SH3 is very touchy. One bit of advice that I can give is to be careful about applying some of the more graphic/system intensive mods (ie. Community Units). If you're unsure about whether your system can cope with a particular mod then don't apply it. You'll save yourself a lot of trouble. I've found that by cutting back on some of the eye candy mods I have a far more stable game.

Alt-tab does it for me (could be memory related, I have since expanded my memory from 1 GB to 3 GB but not tried alt-tab to test stability) and it has also happened scrolling the nav map around the Med, not sure I went over western Russia though, but maybe I did. Other than that I find SH3 with GWX 3 a stable game.

Well I never!!!!!I thought it was just my setup that did that, sometimes forget about it and bang!CTDI thought it was cause I was scrolling to fast and it was sticking the cursoralso noticed that even certain ogg files in the gramaphone folder can cause CTD's,it can be very piccy about which it will play.Another potential CTD hazarrd is graphic settings,to high and when I get close to a large convoy in bad weather and the puter struggles to cope so...CTD's,the usual culprits are Kernell.dll.Nt.dll and another dll file which I can't rememberalso as has been mentioned, the conflict between the community units mod and the GWX Update with Kiel locks and extra ships.....worked for many but for some, myself included it was an absolute mare and CTD Cityoh well,I suppose thats PC gaming for youOH...Almost forgot, the dunkirk curse, come at it at the wrong angle and as your puter struggles to render so many contacts.....bang,CTD AGAINIts there alright no matter how many tell you it isnt

The last ctd that I had (this was a while ago: at least 2 months) occurred when two large convoys spawned simultaneously within 50km of each other and my position. I was also going at high tc when they spawned so that didn't help matters.

Yes this one I can confirm as well... Got a CTD once on the approach on Dunkirk when lots of action happens there and was thrown out of the game.

I simply can't stand it when this happens

Were you using higher time compression while doing this? Two times I scrolled over western Russia from the Med last night & the game didn't crash. I was at 1x TC.

Yes and it surely does have an impact on further desire to play.

So I decided to abandon career and play sh3 + gwx3 online at comsubspac and it's fine..

My biggest cause of CTD's for the first couple months turned out to be heat issues. After playing for about an hour or so, I'd get a CTD. Tried more RAM, same problem.
I finally blew out the dust in the computer case, installed a case cooling fan, and a new power supply after discovering the power supply fan was not working.

Haven't had a CTD since.
