Default Mech game

OK, so last MechWarrior game was put out ages ago in game terms, back in 2003? MechWarrior 4 and its expansion.
Last MechCommander game was put out even before that.
Is the franchise dead?
Are people no longer interested in being MechJok's?
Has the I'm a big walking target nor longer finding its appeal in military circles?

Microsoft pulled the plug on FASA studios about a year ago. The guys who ran it seperated and made a new company called "Smith and Tinker" and they bought the rights to Mechwarrior/Battletech, Shadowrun, and Crimson Skies at about the same time. Since it takes a long time for a studio to build itself from the ground AND start programming with no base, it may still be a little while before we see so much as an announcement from them.

I actually played MechWarrior 4 yesterday, it's really a shame they're not making any new ones

Could try 'Space Siege' by Chris Taylor & Gas Powered games (Creators of that Dungeon Siege mouse clicking fest)

Its RPG and probably the closest thing your get to mechs at the moment.

I'd say even 'T-34 vs. Tiger' is closer to Mechs than that

Space siege was crap compared to Dungeon Siege (1 and 2).

All this talk about mechs makes me want to go play the original Mechwarrior (called Battletech i think) again

Oops, I slipped up there. The original was simply called Mechwarrior , but there was a strategy game based on the Battletech universe called "Battletech : The Crescent Hawks Revenge", quite good for it's time.

I've yet to try it's prequel "Battletech : The Crescent Hawks Inception" (RPG for the most part)

Taken from wikipedia :
Quote:
FASA unexpectedly ceased active operations on April 30, 2001, but still exists as a corporation holding intellectual property rights, which it licenses to other publishers.

[...]
On December 6, 2007, FASA founder Jordan Weisman announced that his new venture, Smith & Tinker, had regained the electronic gaming rights to MechWarrior, Shadowrun, and Crimson Skies.
Quote:
Smith & Tinker is an electronic entertainment company founded in 2007 by Jordan Weisman, Tim Lebel and Joe Lawandus. On October 15, 2007, they announced that they had licensed from Microsoft the rights for Weisman's previous creations of MechWarrior, Shadowrun, Crimson Skies and other FASA titles and would be announcing their plans for these intellectual properties at a later date.

The name of the company is based upon the fictional characters Smith and Tinker, an artist and an inventor who are briefly mentioned in the Land of Oz series of books. This is evidenced by the mention of Emerald City on the company web site.

So apparently it is not totally dead.

edit : oops missed CaptHawkeye post up there telling basically the same thing

I sure do miss them mech games... I have the table top games to.. with all the lead and pewter peices. Wolf clan mechs all the way.

I used to display my collection of custom painted mechs and warhammer peices on a table to show off to my bro's or guests. But my daughter found it fun to have her own war and destroyed my display... All those small fist craters and bent peices was a killer.

Now its in a box till shes older.

You might wanna check out this: http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/

It's a modification for the game "crysis". It will turn the game into something like Mechwarrior 5. Unfortunately it's not released yet, but it will be and it will be great. One of the mod-developers even got hired by crytek, the company that made crysis. Those modding guys are awesome and know what they're doing.

I love the Tabletop, read about 50 Battletech Novels and of course played every single Battletech pc-game i could get my hands on.

For the Tabletop fans out there, you might want to check out "megamek" (google), it's a java game and has the original tabletop rules and many many features, lots of fun.

There's also another version with an online campaign where you fight other players, google for "megameknet"

I still regard the big prison break in Crescent Hawk's Revenge as one of the most nail-bitingly tough (in a fun way) mission or series of missions in any game I've played. All the clan stuff was kind of an anticlimax after that...much like in BT itself.

In Inception, I loved all the strange stuff you could do, like go see a holo film, or blow up hundreds of people to steal a Locust and none of your companions even bat an eyelash...
