Default US medals fix mod

there a way to remove, not replace, one of the medals? the one that bothers me a bit is the Medal of Honor, 2 of which i received. the reason being, i feel that having these in SH4 deminishes their meaning and those who are deserved of receiving them. yeah, i know it's "'only' a game", but....

I agree and so would "Lucky Fluckey" I presume. He was of the opinion that the MoH should be for the dead and I think that the MoH should only be awarded if you go down with your boat.
If you don't go down then the highest medal should be the Navy Cross.

That would be too much for me, I just want it when I die. Lucky Fluckey was Eugene Flucky, the captain of the USS Barb.

it's the principle of the thing, yanno? like, the first one i got after my 2nd patrol and over 30k sunk. next was a Navy Commendation Medal and then another MoH for my 4th patrol amd sinking Shokaku, Chotase and 3 DDs

Yes, the Medal of Honor can be replaced with another medal, such as the Navy Cross. There are six awards the game uses for service decorations. Although I do not know what criteria the game uses for which medals (this set of data is not readily available to me, although the Purple Heart is pretty straight forward, you die you receive the medal) the medals can be moved about within the six positions to whatever you want. As in the U.S. Medals Fix mod, the lower tier award was changed to the Navy Commendation Medal. The Bronze Star and Silver Star were moved up in rank, with the elimination of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal.

So the question is, what six medals or awards would you want to see? I agree, I thought the CMOH should have never been an award for this game with the criteria of highest total tonnage sunk wins the award. The six tier's could be as follows:

Navy Cross
Silver Star
Bronze Star
Navy Commendation Medal
Good Conduct Medal ?
Purple Heart

As far as the game see's them, the Purple Heart is used for the death or the wounding of the player. It really isn't a part of the tier rank of awards but rather (as it should be) an award for a particular reason, not associated with tonnage sunk.

The only problem I have with the Navy Good Conduct Medal is that the Real Life criteria is for "completes three consecutive years of "honorable and faithful service".

I used the Navy Commendation Medal (even though it didn't exist before 1943) in the mod. I'm not so sure the GCM would really be a good fit. One would have to overlook the fact that potentially the medal was awarded for a low tonnage sunk (about 10 to 20,000 tons) perhaps on the first patrol of a career. It really doesn't lend itself to want to fit at all, considering the award is for longevity and honorable service.

There is a modern day award called the Navy/USMC Achievement Medal that could fit the criteria, except the award was first given in 1963! Really the number of awards are limiting without seeming to be a reach for unrealistic issue. We just don't have many medals to choose from, unlike some nations that give a chest full just for showing up.

Captain Scurvy - what about using the Navy Commendation Medal twice - use it for the two lowest medal slots. That would increase it to make it most common which seems appropriate.

What do you think?

Ok, now that's not a bad idea.

The original Navy Commendation was a "Ribbon" award not a medal. That was changed in 1943. Making the ribbon as the lowest tier award, then a medal, and moving the rest up in the tier group to eliminate the top tier CMOH would fit into the idea we've been discussing.

Brilliant ! ! !
Two heads (or 3, or 4) are better then one, .......even if they are cabbage!!

My only problem is I don't have a video card that is accepting the video acceleration drivers for it. I just upgraded the entire computer and I'm having lock-ups with the nVidia drivers for an 8800 GS. The manufacture of the board is aware of the problem but they haven't given me a RMA yet to look at the culprit (the board). Sooooo, I won't be able to work on the images unless I commandeer my wifes computer.

Hmmmmmm, in the dead of 'nite....... :hmm:

I don't see the awards in SH as real, nor do I believe I am in the US Navy commanding a submarine.

The argument for removing the CMOH from your mod could also be used for removing the Silver Star and other medals.... (that we certainly don't deserve)

Recently a group of soldiers in a 'war zone' were awarded the Silver Star medal. One carried his own leg that had been blown off in the fire fight down to the rescue choppers and was also applying pressure to another wounded soldiers wounds without regard for his own life. These brave soldiers were all awarded the Silver Star medal - for real.

IMO you should keep your medals mod as it is. This is a game and those graphics are not real medals & citations. There are always the original SH4 stock awards for those who don't want to see a CMOH ..... or a Silver Star graphic.

I'm not playing this game for medals. I'm playing SH4 because I have always been interested in submarines and especially the US Boats in the Pacific Theatre.

Happy Hunting!
