Start a new career in august 1939
What do you do during that boring month of august when all you have to do is seeing all kind of ships passing by?
 I got to my patrol area at 4 kt 20 days before the start of the war! I decided to place my boat inside of Scapa and wait until BdU tells me to sink them all, but 8 days there is very boring. |

Well, the GWX manual advises you to do a quick patrol and head back to base. You should then be at sea again just a few days before war is declared.
Realistically there is no way you would be allowed anywhere near a major naval base, since while it's still technically peacetime there is too much beligerent talk going on for anyone to be that lenient. Boats sent out in mid-August all went to the North Atlantic, as far as I know.
