I lost my best officer

Hi everyone!

Last night I was on my way to GRID " ET 21 " (close to Freeetown)
it was calm , nice weather so I ordered my gunners to man the deckgun
And so I ordered my best watch officer Johannes Schönfeld (Oberleutnant .z.s.)
To stay on guard .
Then suddently he said " ship spotted sir " I saw two ships ,
one motorwessel , and a " Medium cargo " 7540 meters a way , so I ordered full ahead , and when I was 5000meters away then the motorwessel opened fire ,
and one of the shells hit the watch tower and killed my best officer
my boat getting a lot of beating and in the end I managed to sink them both .
It's a sad moment he's gonna get properly burriel and I'm gonna be very careful next time .
And hopefully my new Officer gonna live up to Johannes Schönfelds memory

I lost five men, including the WO, some time ago in my current career. It was during a needles gunfight with a small merchant near US coast in 1942.
Since that day, I almost never used my deck gun again.

I sympathize with your loss.

May Johannes Schönfeld's memory live on in the annals of maritime history, and may his replacement be half the officer Johannes was.

A toast to the memory of a fallen comerade!

Ciao StarLion,

I feel your pain! Something like that, only worse, happened to me not long ago. Caught by bombers while leaving port. I was on the bridge when my whole flak team (5 men) bought it. It happened so fast!

It was the biggest emotional shock I've had playing GWX -- I had something like survivor guilt, replaying the event in my mind, wondering how I could have saved these men. As a result I wrote it into a story for this year's Subsim contest.

BTW, you write with an accent that reminds me of Chekov from Star Trek: "nuclear wessels"! I like it!

Amasingly, Ive used my deckgun aginst distroyers and won. Never lost a crewmember. Ive been doing this eversince the war started, and its january 1941. 90% realism, gotta have external views to see the beautiful scenery.:p

I lost an officer my last W@W patrol as well. I had 1 torpedo left and two armed merchants in front of me, in beautiful weather. I stopped the first ship with the torpedo, and inexplicably the other untouched ship stopped behind it. I guess it was rescuing the crew?

Either way, I made a mistake of coming up at 600 meters away to deck gun them. after getting quite a bit of damage and losing my officer I submerged, came around from 1500 meters away. By this time the first ship had sunk, but the second was still sitting there. I finished it off from range.
