Default Deck Gun

Am using RSRD with TM 1.52. Cannot figure out how to get the deck gun to work. Selecting the deck gun icon, and clicking on Man the Deck Gun and Fire at Will at Waterline, even with smooth water, results in nothing. Furthermore when using manual, it seems impossible to get the range to spool up quickly. What am I doing wrong? Am used to SH3 and GWX, but this seems different. Is there some guidance out there I missed reading?

I am also haveing the same issue(there are people on the deck gun). I have to man it myself.

I'm sure you both know that holding shift when zoomed in on the deck gun will make it go up faster...
other than that, with the nothing happening problem, i dunno what to say

Find the target with your binocs and press SPACE BAR to mark it as a target and your crew should start shooting. You'll see the little yellow ^ marker show under the ship.

Also make sure you actually have crew in the Deck Gun. I think by default SH4 sends you out with no crew manning it.

slightly off topic but does anyone know of anyway to destabilize the deck gun. And I do knot mean in the gameplay settings. Using TMO+RSRD+PE4 it seems the deck gun on my Sargo is steady as a rock even in 15 mph wind. Any clues? Sorry to hijack.

Make sure that you have men assigned to the deck gun slot and then you have to click on the ammo when you have the deck gun open to make them load. You only have to do this once...

in the crew management screen in base move new people to the deck gun from a random compartment then move them back...It's a glitch....sometimes this works

Well. There seem to be a multitude of 'solutions':

Sledgehammer427: I thank you for the answer. I presume you mean that the range will increase rapidly if one holds the shift key with the deck gun on zoom. I'll try it. Hope it helps.

kylania: I would expect that all subs would not have crew 'on' the deck gun until commanded to man the gun, but I had forgotten the binoc + space bar lock for the deck gun. I'll try that and hope it helps too.

DaveP63: I don't have any problem actually firing the deck gun manually (except for getting it to ramp up to the proper range rapidly enough to make the whole thing reasonable). As for Manning the Gun...isn't the command to do so working? It doesn't seem to be for me as I mentioned in the original query.

gimpy117: I tried that via F7 (I think that's the crew management command). No joy.

I appreciate all the answers. I think the best way to figure things out may be to do the "training exercise" for deck gun to see what works. Must admit that I skipped it. New game, new rules.

Thanks to all.

my 2 cents:

check to be sure "fire at will" order is on.
