OK, file me in the "something else" category.
I use Periscope observations, or occasionally radar and/or active sonar, and Hitman's Kriegsmarine whiz-wheel. I enter the data manually into the vorhaltrechner. I don't plot contacts, either on the in-game map or seperately on a maneuvering board or graph paper, although I have done all three in the past.

I'm bone-idle and let my officers do the working out. What are they there for if not to do their job?:hmm:

I agree with Chisum. After all, I am the great and mighty captain, and i allow my officers the pleasure of running the necessary calculations.

I like the idea of letting the officers do the work, but unfortunately they are way too perfect for someone who considers himself a realism buff.
I'm slowly learning U-Jagd tools, which has an on-screen version of the whiz-wheel.

I let my officer do the work as did most real kaleuns but always bring my touch if i don't quite agree with him , i use all realism option ticked except this one , simply because i can never estimate the distance to the ship accurately (hardest for me , especially in bad wheather ) , for the angle i'm often about right as i always try everything to flank him and manoeuver to have a good angle (80-110° ) but when i'm not in "ideal "position i struggle to be accurate , and for the speed i sometimes make mistakes too but it's the easiest part so i usually correct angle and speed when i don't agree with the weapon officer (which is quite rare i have to say ) .

Olc mod, 100% reality. I like to do it myself. More satisfaction.
I worked my vista to accept the GWX and all the extrass / took me 6 months / but unfortunately no Olc special runs on it without black sky. If Olc only everything runns fine.:hmm: |

1WO (aka Weapons Officer) does all the surface attacks; submerged attacks I calculate and input the data myself. All gunnery is done by the crew, I never man the guns myself but since I usually patrol in 1944 and later, all this talk of guns and surface attacking belong in the past. However, I try to keep the 1WO busy when patrolling the Black Sea...

For me it's a combination of 1 and 3, but I voted 3 of course.

Depends on situation, methods 1,3 & 4. The last one is guesswork by estimating, using ships visual orientation, usually close range.

I do have the OLC Gui mod, and I love it to bits. But I must admit I spend most of my time drawing on the navmap. I.e. drawing hydrophone bearings and attempting to fit a course in between them. Once I have that I try to draw a speed diagram to get an intercept course, maintain distance/'go roundabout' or for avoidance. And when visual contact is made simply taking my watch-officer's range/bearing reports and plot them. So by the time I am ahead of the target (at 90 degrees) I don't have to look through the scope anymore to get an AOB, speed or range. But I rely heavily on the built-in Attackdisk and Range/AOB calculator in OLC's Gui to get those.
