April 8, 1940 - u-boat in Vestfjord near Narvik

U-53 patroling near Narvik in the Vestfjord on April 8, 1940. Just as it happened in real life; heavy rain and wind, with poor visibility at dusk, here comes the tanker Jan Wellem followed by three freighters. While submerged, approximately three hours later, ten German destroyers pass overhead on their way to Narvik with the mountain infantry. Am continuing to patrol the entrance to Narvik. Here is where I saved the game, to be continued.

On April 10, if history repeats itself, I should see five British destroyers sailing into Vestfjord to take on the German destroyers. Then, on April 13, nine British destroyers and the battleship Warspite finish off all remaining German destroyers. Should be interesting! Will history repeat itself?

Go get 'em Kaleun! I've heard the operation was a terrible flaw, and 90% of the U-boats actually missed their targets!

May 9/10, 1940 - The Kriegsmarine plays practically no part in the German western offensive against Holland, Belgium and France after sustaining heavy loses during Operation Weser Exercise. The battlecruiser Gneisenau is the only capital ship that remains operational. Only two U-boats patrol the northen approaches to the English Channel during the first week of the western offensive.

June 10, 1940 - Operation Weser Exercise ends with the surrender of the Norwegian troops. The German Naval High Command calls the use of major naval vessels against Norway "a serious strategical error." As a result, the German Navy is in no position to support a potential invasion of England and the delays in restoring damaged ships to operational readiness will have a detrimental effect. Great Britain, despite its defeat in Norway, acquires almost 90% of the enormous Norwegian Merchant Navy totaling 1,024 ships including two hgundred tankers.

The battleship Warspite and nine destroyers in driving snow make a surprise foray into the Vestford on April 13, 1940. The eight remaining German destroyers are all lost in this action. By evening, not one German destroyer survives of the ten that four days earlier brought troops to Narvik. (Sea War, 1939 - 1945)

Early morning, April 12, 1940, U-53 is submerged, traveling southwest in AF61 when I get an HE (hydrophone effect) almost dead ahead. It is the British battleship Warspite and nine destroyers heading for the Vestfjord. I only have one torpedo left since I wasted eight against the five destroyers mentioned in post #1 with only one destroyer to show for it.

Results: Sunk one Tribal class destroyer in AF6142 on April 12, 1940 at 5:42am. This task force is located at exactly 255-kmeters NW of Namsos at this precise time.
