UBM game will not start

I downloaded SH4 uboat from Direct2Drive okay( no game .exe on the desktop), installed it over a clean SH4_1.4.
Went to SH4 uboat main directory and clicked on SH4.exe. Activation was successful.
Clicked 'start activation', got black screen, I called up Win Task Manager to quit. Message screen "This application has failed to start because um.Dll was not found".
So I copied the um.Dll from a 2nd SH4_1.4 into the Data folder.
Clicked on SH4.exe. Got black screen and the same message that zlib.Dll not founded. copied zlib.. dll, clicked Sh4.exe.
Got black screen and same message that binkw32dll missing.Copied Bink file, clicked SH4.exe.
Got black screen and same message that statemachine.dll not found. Copied file, clicked SH4.exe. got black screen and message"File not found
Data/Menu/Data /black.tga", copied file.
Clicked on SH4.exe, got black screen and message: "file not found Progressbar_filltexture.tga", copied file.
Clicked on SH4.exe got screen with sub piciture,progress bar starts goes 1/3 the way and I get a black screen with no message, game freezes.

The Data folder in SH4 uboat has 3 folders and 9 files but in SH4_1.4 there is 5 folders and 191 files.

I downloaded UBM 3 move times, repeated above, and got the same results.

I submited the above to Direct2Drive and below is their reply.

"If you have already been through the game activation screen then your service with Direct2Drive has concluded."

do you have a no cd crack file? that could be the trouble but my guess is there was a mod or leftover piece of one still installed in the game.

completely uninstall the game and install a fresh new game but do not update it, ubm handles updating the game for you so after the game is installed then install ubm and your good to go.

i would only buy from a soght that gives you an .exe download file so you can save it to disk. your going to need to reinstall once and a while anyway because using mods will cause things to get fubarbed sooner or later.

That's the reason we have JSGME for: No more fubared installation because of mods. The newer version are even more idiot-proof than the older ones, since they don't allow you to disable mods in the wrong order. I've been using and experimenting with tons of mods, and haven't reinstalled since the very beginning(1.2 for me). Everything is running ok here. Mods aside, you're right that it's absolutely essential to have a copy of SH4 and UBM on a disk because you never know what happens.

Thanks Webster, that was it. I first tried to install UBM over a clean SH4_1.4. But As you suggested I did it again with SH_1.0 out of the retail box_its a go.
