I came back to SH3 after a break to find the immersion level transformed by GWX and other modders. I was on my third patrol from St Nazaire in U99 in May 1941, and this corresponded with the timing of Rheinubung. I was able to react to messages from BDU to join the uboats in the Biscay area. On 27th May at 0432 BDU messaged Uboats to proceed to NE of BE53 to help out the Bismarck. I was one grid away, and proceeded at flank. As I got closer I was forced under repeatedly by patrolling Swordfishes. I eventually arrived in the general area just before the time pescribed. My soundman picked up distant warship, and I was rewarded with the sight of the Bismarck. Two more sound contacts turned out to be HMS Rodney and King George V. After a gunbattle the Bismarck was sunk. A further 2 sound contacts turned into 2 Dorsetshire Cruisers. As there were no ASW assets, I was able to use high underwater speeds to try and position myself to avenge the Bismarck. But what's 8 knots against 25?. All I was doing was depleting batteries. It was going to be more a matter of chance that one of the warships would come close. The nearest I got to the Battleships was 8 k's, however the Dorsetshires ploughed ahead to within 1000m of me, and I let lose at the lead with a spread of 4. Two hits near the stern slowed the lead ship down to about 10 knots. I was unable to catch up to deliver a killer shot.......she was last seen zigzagging into the distance with a list at the stern. I sailed over to the Bismarck's last position and patrolled for about an hour to simulate the search for survivors.
Anyway I know it has been said a million times, but hats off to the GWX team and all other modders who have transformed SH3. Regards |
