Default open letter to sh4 modders

i hope this is in the right place to post this.sh4 is the first subsim game ive played since slient service on my powerful commodore 64.gave away my age on that one.needless to say the graphics have come along way in twenty some years.

sh4 is far superior in every respect but one imo.the convoy ai was much better in ss.when convoys are attacked in sh4 each ship begins a swerving motion in random directions that breaks up the convoy formation and this continues even after youve done a end around and attack them 2 hours later.i suppose this is what the designers call zig- zaging.it would be more realistic to have all the merchants in the convoy keep thier place in the formation, inrease speed to the max.of the slowest ship and make 45 degree or less turns every thousand yards or so while still still maintaining their base course.after a couple of hours or so the convoy would slow down to its origanal speed. in fact ,having the convoy zig zag all the time as i descibed above would be even better, more challenging to setup a shot and imo more historical.

task forces would be handled the same way except their intial speed would be closer to twenty knots instead of 11 or 12.ive read of many instances where a u.s. submarine would get only one crack at a task force because of their greater speed.

i dont have the foggiest notion how to acomplish this but it is food for thought for all of you that are capable and into this sort of thing.

this is my only real issue i have with sh4.its a great game.

Welcome SubDriver1

I first cut my teeth on SS on 64 also. Enjoy the game, try a few mods once your comfortable. Plenty of good people here, so do a little reading, ask the right questions and i'm sure you will find what you need, to make your game experience everything you wanted

Welcome matey! D/L your favoured mod like Trigger Maru or RFB and watch as the convoy breaks up and steams all over the place once your fish run straight and true (ha ha ha - skippers in '41 - '42 will have a laugh at that one) it's like poking a beehive with a stick...

Welcome aboard Matie.

although convoy routes and speeds of groups we can
easily affect the behaviour of the escorts when they
are freewheeling is not something we have access too
I dont think.

Ah, I had that game for my Atari130XE! Good times...you'd start loading the game, go for breakfast, go out for coffee with your friends, and if you were lucky the game had loaded by the time you returned home! :rotfl:

Welcome aboard!
