When I did my first couple of patrols (GWX 1.03) in the north sea I thought (naively) ships went from port to port in roughly straight direction across the sea, not taking too many detours. And that there had to be some chokepoints or high density locations where most of them pass through. I quickly lost any hope of finding those lanes and areas. In the interest of learning how the mission editor works (Yeah right!!! :hmm: ... honest ), I took a look at the random layer of the campaign. Trust me, enough uncertainty to life up to it's name, or not to count on meeting some ship somewhere anytime soon. Eventhough the north sea is relatively small, the merchants pretty much go all over the place, and have several forks in their waypoints which they choose randomly. Your best bets are on entrances to harbours and along the coast (same as the pic). But those are obviously protected heavily and eventually behind a mine curtain. GWX 2 can only have this uncertainty maximised. I can only guess as I never played it.

Your mileage may vary.

one word... Hydrophone

my way of finding them, this is mostly in 1939 and early 1940 draw lines from the Norwegian port of Bergen to Aberdeen, Firth of Forth, Hartlepool and Inverness, then pick one of those lines, find a position within 50km of that line and within 100km of the British coastline then loiter until some unsuspecting merchie comes along, this shouldn't take more than a day or 2, Identify nationality (very important) and sink if hostile....

don't get too near the coastline though because of minefields. I also find the deep areas NE of Hartlepool and E of Rosyth good spots for hunting with a good depth for getting away from any nasties that show up

I thought the minefields surrounding England were much, much further out than at 100km? Indeed, nearly 1/3 the way to Norway (looking from Hartlepool/Firth etc)?

Definately not in the (gwx1.03) campaign. Real-life maybe. Don't know.

Not that early on, and they're not all that dense yet, still, most of the traffic will be inside or just outside the minefields so it pays to be cautious as always
