Default Axis & Allies War At Sea

I was just wondering - does anyone here collect Axis & Allies War At Sea Miniatures? I have started collecting them recently, although I don't have a large collection and haven't got a chance to play very often (my brother is the only person I can find who is even mildly interested in them). So far, I bought two starter sets and a lot of singles (which I got on eBay, usually for surprisingly good prices). When Set 1 is reissued in late July/Early August, I will buy some boosters to increase my collection further, and will keep buying from eBay in the meantime. Here is a list of my entire fleet so far:

Australia:

HMAS Canberra (x1)
HMAS Sydney (x1)

UK:
HMS Javelin (x1)
Sea Hurricane (x2)
HMS Truculent (x1)
HMS Ark Royal (x1)
HMS Exeter (x1)
HMS Ajax (x1)
Swordfish (x1)

France:

Gloire (x1)
Le Terrible (x1)

US:

USS Washington (x1)
USS Princeton (x1)
USS Salt Lake City (x1)
USS Boise (x1)
USS Atlanta (x2)
USS St. Lo (x2)
USS Fletcher (x2)
USS Samual B. Roberts (x1)
USS Barb (x1)
Dauntless (x1)
Devastator (x1)

Germany:

Karl Galster (x2)
U 510 (x1)
Stuka (x2)
FW Kondor (x1)

Italy:
Emanuele Filiberto Duca D'Aosta (x1)
Luca Tarigo (x1)
Ambra (x1)
Motor Torpedo Boat (x3)

Japan:

Kongo (x1)
Akagi (x1)
Tone (x1)
Shoho (x1)
Jintsu (x2)
Kinai Maru (x1)
Yukikaze (x3)
I-19 (x1)
Val (x2)
Kate (x1)

(No, I'm not looking to make any trades as I am happy with all of the doubles in this list so far).

Could these units be used in the regular Axis and Allies game or is it a stand alone clix miniture game?

Why only Early war units? Where are the Bearcats and the Hellcats? Where are the Avengers? Where are the Essex's? Where are the Atlanta Class Light Cruisers? etc. etc.

Actually, if you check my list, you will see that I own 2 Atlanta class CL's. As for the rest, I assume you have read the full list of 64 ships and a/c under the link for the official website (my own collection is quite small) - there are a few late war ships included there (although none of the others you mentioned). But this is not going to be the only set - a second set has been confirmed and will probably be released in early 2008. There is talk of a third and fourth set as well.

If you're talking about any of the boardgames, then no - the miniatures are completely out of scale in comparison to the boardgame pieces (if they were that small, I wouldn't even bother with them, actually). Also, I don't know if they can be used together with the four land sets of Axis & Allies miniatures, but maybe someone out there has found a way to combine them (I don't collect those though).

Default Won USS Washington

I now own the USS Washington as well - won one on eBay for about $5.00 US.I can't believe I got her so cheap. Now, if only I could get the Enterprise, Yamato, Myoko, Shokaku, or Iowa for that price...

Default HMS Warspite

BTW - If anyone is interested in the setlist for the upcoming second set of this game, the HMS Warspite has been 'unofficially' anounced as representative of the Queen Elizabeth class on the official Avalon Hill forum.

Why don't the wizards just release the 64 piece set and spare me the Yu-Gi-Oh trading hassle...

Still hate the thought of buying unseen randomized pieces for trading!

But seriously though, is there a decent gaming concept behind the miniature ship collecting? Do you think my 9yr old son would like it?

We like playing HeroScape and Yu-Gi-Oh. Heroscape takes longer to build the game board than it does to play the game. ...and it takes up a huge area so it's not real popular with mom.

Picked up the 2 player starter set and 2 booster packs just last night to get started. Not sure how much I'll get into it at this point. Haven't read thru the advanced rules yet, but so far it looks somewhat interesting.

With that purchase, I only have 18 units... and only 2 that aren't already on your list: Subchaser, and Richelieu

My initial reaction is...

Pieces are teeny-tiny cheapo plastic army-man quality. I mean I could just about cut the pegs off of the standard MB Battleship game pieces and get the same effect.

I'm gonna see how I like the game itself before getttin too carried away with collecting. It'd be different if the things were highly detailed, but charging $10-15 for a set of 5 of these micro-sized game pieces is a ripoff. I'm guessing they cost about a nickel to produce (if that). I can't even fathom the thought of paying $5 or more for a single piece!

Unfortunately, the guy that sold em to me also said once the ones on the shelves are gone, they wouldn't be carrying em anymore. Apparently there's little to no interest... I guess the Star Wars miniatures games are more popular (and the pieces appear to be nicer)

Well I've got to say I'm happy with my purchase. The models are a little cheesy and I definately agree with aaronblood that have'n to collect the ships is kind of lame. However, you can find partial and complete sets for sale on ebay and at several online game stores from $20 - $340. I just ordered a set of all the commons and a few boosters to see if I get lucky. Not quite ready to throw down $340 for a complete set.

Tuesday nights are now War at Sea game nights for us at work. Two of us have massed some impressive fleets. The models look 100X better if you do a little painting.
Some of the rules need a little tweek'n but in all it's a very fun game.

Eh... I wouldn't spend another dollar on those flimsy plastic army-men quality minis.

And if you're gonna spend time to paint em, there's got to be a better quality (perhaps metal) miniature out there. Anyone know of any? I used to love painting little D&D figures back in the day. Be great to paint up a nicely detailed fleet of metal minis.

You are right, the stock ruleset was totally lame.
Particularly annoying was:
  1. Lack of any sort of positioning strategy like "crossing the T" or moving in formation.
  2. First strike advantages.
  3. Some silly unit specific "special abilities"
Did you guys do anything to overcome any of this with your rule tweeks?

The game is really a lightweight filler but the minis are really nice. I use them for playing Command at Sea. The only thing I don't like is the random assortment packs. It's tough to get a large number of ships that belong to the same country to make fleets. Ebay is the place to go for them. You can pick up large lots of them all the time.
