U-48, U-Flotilla Saltzwedel Left at: October 25, 1939, 22:18 From: Wilhelmshaven Mission Orders: Patrol grid BE67 fr: U48 to: BDU have sunk the following with torpedoes and deckgun fire. some damage sustained in surface engagement with enemy destroyer; believe class to have been J&K. enemy destroyer also sustained some minor damage including hit from torpedo but did not sink. 3 merchants left burning: HMS Somali (Tribal class), 1850 tons S.S. John D. Gill (Tramp Steamer), 1945 tons M/V Ganges (Medium Cargo), 4164 tons S.S. Fort St. Nicolas (Small Merchant), 3219 tons S.S. Tavern (Small Tanker), 5856 tons Medium Tanker, 8702 tons M/V Donbass (Large Tanker), 9518 tons M/V St. Mary's (Large Tanker), 9519 tons M/V Myrtlebank (Medium Cargo), 5271 tons S.S. Shillong (Large Merchant), 8063 tons Patrol tonnage: 58107 tons
