Default Stuck at bottom

Firstly, hello all! I only discovered this game a few weeks back and bought a few others at the same time but haven't even touched them. This game is brilliant, and GWX has to be the best mod made for any game, ever.

That having been said, I am still fairly poor at captaining a sub, and have a minor problem. My current boat, U-48 (VIIB) is doomed. She is lying at the bottom, 70km south of Plymouth at 80m depth, having been depth-charged to blazes. 11 crew dead, electric motors destroyed, and no compressed air , but enough oxygen left for many hours of claustrophobic soul-searching and preparations for death . French and Brit destroyers are circling above but have stopped unloading DCs - I guess they ran out. The odd plane comes by and drops a few but they keep missing by a long-shot. So I am just sitting there, waiting for the oxygen to run out, and can't compress time more than 8x due to enemy proximity. This has been going on for 4 hours or more of gametime.

I am using "Commander" and want my captain's profile to correctly reflect his short career (3 Jan, 1940) - he did OK for a noob - 4 patrols for about 60,000 tons. I know he and his crew are dead men, but what is the best way to end this?

What happens if I "exit patrol"? I am guessing he will miraculously make it back to base, and that would be cheating........

Use "Commander" to up the time compression? And why don't the destroyers move along if they have no DC's left?

I am unsure, folks, as I have never been in this position before (hopefully the first and last time).

Great site BTW, any responses will be viewed with appreciation......

Cheers,

boofhead

Welcome!

I think that if you exit patrol at that point, it'll say that your u-boat was lost with all hands. But to be fair, it sounds like you had it coming... You've taken a pasting.

STAY OUT OF DER KANAL!!! Going round the North of Scotland takes longer but gets you there alive!

Hmmm. If that'll update my man's profile it might be the best option....

LOL I usually do but I attempted my first enemy port attack at Plymouth (having gone around the long way) and got right up close to the docks - within about 1km. I was never pinged at all. Then I got cocky and thought that as I had made the port incursion successfully the Channel should be no problem going home I didn't even get into the Channel proper, really.....

EDIT: Thanks for the kind welcomes, guys!

I'm using GWX. And yeah, I have been destroyed in the Channel 3 times in 3 attempts. You'd think I would learn....

That's why the Germans captured France. So, they wouldn't be tempted to take that Channel shortcut anymore. Getting to the North Atlantic convoy lanes does get easier come the summer of 1940. Welcome aboard!

Dont listen to what everyone says about the channel... its EASY!!!

/thumbing my nose at gwx

I've done it a few times, but never really had any problems - I stick to the south rather than going through tthe middle. Only once have i gone up north with GWX and that was to intercept a convoy. Down south theres not many problems at all... Although i've seen on here the number of mines which are around the place.

Either way, I do it only if im keen for some risk, its normally too shallow to do safely anyway.

I always used the Channel until I was transfered from Willhelmshaven to Lorient. Stay 3000 metres off Calais, far enough out to avoid the mines and being spotted by the armed trawlers in the port and close enough inshore to miss the others further out. Run decks awash (7m) in the full dark, whilst the French coast is still hostile. After that when it is in German hands, still transit at night but you can now do it fully surfaced. If you calculate you arrival time off Calais right, you can make it through well before dawn. Then silent running through the daylight hours sticking to the south of the channel. Not too close inshore where it is too shallow. You will probably get contact reports showing convoys in the channel, but I alwas ignore them. It's way too shallow for that kind of thing.
I would wait until the last minute before exiting your mission, the weather might turn bad and the destroyers could loose their fix on you, if your very lucky. A quick heroic surface dash in the dark might pull it off, or not. Never mind about the dead crew, as soon as you surface just toss them overboard like dead mackerel.:p

dont give up the ship! is there nothing you can do?

you have exhausted every option?

do you have flooding? or are you partially flooded?

are you rigged for silent running?

if i were you, when the enemy leaves the area i would secure from silent running and repair the boat. push the S key and see if the boat will slowly rise to the surface.

If it does... set course for home at the best possible speed.

I was thinking the same thing as GoldenRivet.... are you rigged for silent running? The only chance you have to get rid of those dds is to make sure Bernard isn't rattling utensils in the officers mess during a mug up. Good luck, mate.

@Jochen: What realism are you using doing your channel escapades?

Using 100% realism, I've not yet made it through alive...

I can get through that channel in 1944 on the surface and only get attacked 2 times.

And one more thing how are you moving at 20 knots at ahead standard?

Trust me, exactly 3000m decks awash in full dark on the Calais side both in and outbound. In a VIIB and IXB, works every time.

This tip comes to you from 'Katherines Used and Refurbished U-Boat Tips' , best deal in town.
