Problem solved - it wasn't audio!

I was reading "Windows XP Tips and Tricks," by Stuart Yarnold (great book), doing tweaks and getting rid of unnecessary junk on my HD, clicked on the HD properties and discovered the disk was almost full!

After reinstalling SH3 I had four installs of SH3, two heavily modded, so I deleted two (a clean install backed up on DVD and an extra GW) and now both the other (GWX & WAC) work! I wondered why my system seemed slow.

I'm so happy! I was almost ready to cry after I'd rebuilt my computer, did a repair of windoze and couldn't relax with a SH3 session!

I'm still having audio problems with other programs that play video, but so far both SH3s sound fine. Thanks to Tarjak, Reece and Canovaro! I've never met a better bunch of gamers than on subsim!

btw, anyone know how much HD space SH3 uses to run?

Aww shucks. Thanks Shegeek.

Good to see you've been able to solve the problem. nothing worse that cracking your head against a nasty that crops up and stops you playing one of your favourite games. And well done you for working it out. There is no replacement for reading and researching when it comes to this sort of thing. In almost every case someone somewhere has come across your problem before and written about it on the innernet.

The box says 2GB but that doesn't count having a mods file or multi-installs. It will depend on what mods you use. IIRC GWX in the MODS folder will add at least 1GB once its there in all its glory.

SH3 uses every bit of your Ram it can lay it´s hands on and then it will use as much of your swapfile it can force Windows to release. Something like 2Gigs hd space or more, depending on how much Ram you have. I have 1024Mb Ram and have set my swapfile to 5Gig once and for all

5 gig swap file? Microshaft says 4095 is the max: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...ab3a78c3c.aspx

Giving yourself some extra headroom?

Thanks for the post. I just checked and I had the pagefile set to OFF on my backup (80g) HD! I set it min. 2046, max. 4092. That should speed things up a bit! I have 2 gigs of RAM.

PS Got an AMD 4200+ X2 mobo coming.

I'm a bit jealous
Still using a 3200 939 with DDR and AGP, but it's holding it's own.

Isn't it funny how we build systems around our favorite pc habits?

Funny no. Predictable yes. What's currently driving PC tech for the last 5 years has been gaming and 3d video not business apps. Bloody glad it is too. This much more fun than playing with Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets on an XT dual floppy with no HDD and 640KB of RAM.

Nobody needs more than 640kb or RAM. Bill someone...

You don't know how much I've missed salty, stinging spray hitting my face, the creaking and groaning of my IXC and the smell of dirty clothes and diesel fuel! :p

September 1987. Acorn Archemedes. External 35Mb HD - £400 ($800 approx). No idea what that'd be in today's money. Double? Treble? 1 Mb RAM, it didn't need any more, but I bought another Meg "just because". 4096 colours, which was amazing back then - my previous BBC Model B had just 16 and 8 of those were just flashing combinations of the other 8! Just for the record, the Archemedes is still running. My ex-wife still uses it now and then! Those were the days (yeah, right) :rotfl:

sheegeek72;

I see by your first post you have multiple sh3 (GWX & WAC) installs. This is what I was thinking of doing once new versions are released. Did you by chance move carrer saves or just start with fresh installs and go from there?

I moved the career saves. Have done it several times without problem.
