Default Patch 1.3 = No Disk

Is it just me or has the 1.3 patch eliminated the need to have
the disk in the drive to play. I used to get the disk check upon
starting but now it just loads directly without checking for the disk.

Nope it is everyone. If you watch the patch load in the very last file is the no cd exe file. Nice added little bonus

Indeed they do - makes me happy being able to put my DVD up and not have to worry about getting into (more) trouble for discussing no cd cracks... Plus will cut down on the number of folks asking about why something is goofy when they used one. A thanks to the devs (and to ubi who had to ok it..)!

Yes, I agree. It is great not having to have the disk loaded everytime you want to play BUT. Does this not open a huge barn door to piracy? And if it does, that surely will impact on revenue for UBI. UBI must know this and also know that loyalty from legit customers has been severley undermined given the original copy to the point where some might rationalise "you screwed me, so now my buddy gets my disk and patch".

So, my worry is, maybe they have decided that that is it with subsim and it is time to move on and are prepared to accept the loss in future sales.:hmm:

IMO No. This game was already cracked way before patch 1.3 so i dont see a difference - also people will still go out buying the game not knowing about whats in patch 1.3 (no-cd) until they install the patch, even then they still might not know. Some gamers new to subsim games wont even install the patches or know about them. Hence a mate of mine still plays Silent Hunter 3 version 1.0, to him the game aint broken so no need to fix it.

No again. One game comes to mind that has put out a no-cd was "X2 The Threat" also another - Nexus. I dont think they will see a loss in future sales cause not everyone that plays games is into these nocds/cracks etc., so they wont know about it. eg Some will still put in the dvd after patching it to 1.3 not knowing you dont need it. Im one of them! i didn't even know about the nocd in patch 1.3 until i read it here...

Same, here.

I'd read (in another post, IIRC), that this just removes the check for the DVD. IE., the DVD is still needed to prevent the "Fade" protection scheme from breaking the game after you've played it for a while. It just doesn't check for the DVD first, anymore.

If so, this inclusion of the "no DVD check" might be accidental, in the same way the periscope animations broke in this patch.

It't the ever continuing debate: does no-cd patching improve pirating? I don't think so, because you simply can't prove people who dl'ed a game would have bought it also if they hadn't had the opportunity to dl in the first place.

A big thumbs up from me to UBI for this feature!

Well, the case of 'Starsiege: Tribes' is pretty damning. Multiplayer-only game with no CD check - at it's peak, it had over 1 million people playing on the public servers. Which is pretty remarkable, when you think about it, given the game only sold about 200,000 copies, took a full CD to copy, and this was before the time of widespread broadband.

For the non-math-savvy, that's 4 copies stolen for every 1 sold.

You still need the DVD for the game to run properly.

One example is the characters in the command room "losing" their eyes.
