Default RealNav Mod - 1280x1024 Sextant image

I cannot test this for accuracy as my screen is 1024x768 , so it's up to you to check it out. Please read the text file as it has the info required to manually insert this. It simple enough so should not be a problem.

To test this - make a simple single mission in the mission editor.
Place your sub at 60 North (anywhere), with flat seas and clear sky, 00:00 hours.
When playing this mission, find Polaris and if it's on the top edge of your screen (with bottom of screen aligned with the horizon) it should be ok. this will indicate that the 1280x1024 screen is nothing more than a scaled 1024x768 screen..

thanks for taking the time to make a 1280x1024 sextant!

I made some test measurements:

on 20° lat I get sextant reading of 20°
on 25° lat I get ~26° (I think here it is spot on, if you subtract the 50' (~1°) from polaris readings.
on 30° lat I get ~32°
on 35° lat I get ~38°
on 40° lat I get ~43,5°


everything above 45° is not measureable - the sextant scale is only visible to 45° on the screen.
I guess the way the resolution is "stretched" from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 it is not possible to use it for the nav mod.
It's better to revert back to native 1024x768 if you want to shoot stars with acceptable results.
(vanjast, I think you had good results with your sextant readings there.)

Georg, from what I understand.. is that with that screen res changer utility, that changes resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x1024, you can only see 45 Degrees in the vertical ?

Whereas on the game default (1024x768) res one can see 60 Degrees in the vertical.

Can you post some screenies, please!

Hi Georg,

same problem here . Everyting above 45° is not measureable. Have you tried 1280x960? Maybe better to revert back to 1024x768.

certainly, here is a screenshot from 1280x1024 resolution using the new 1280 sextant.
It was taken at 32° latitude showing measurement of polaris:




Regarding resolution change - I use the wikipedia solution with a d3d9.dll and d3d9.cfg and Microsoft application compatibility toolkit
to override the 1024x768. The negative effect is the "stretching" of the screen because of ratio change from 4:3 (1024x768) to 5:4 (1280x1024).
It messes up the vertical of the screen, thus it won't be possible to use sextant efficiently. I think we should forget about higher resolutions.

A slight change to your measuring point - see pic You must make sure that you measure at screen X-Axis centre. If you look at Polaris as you rotate your view you'll notice that the angle changes, as it does in RL.

vanjast, thanks for explanation - I didn't know that.

I give you another series of 1280 measurements, now with star & sextant centered on screen:

at 10° lat: reading 10°
at 15° lat: reading 15°
at 20° lat: reading 20°
at 25° lat: reading 25,5°
at 30° lat: reading 31°
at 35° lat: reading ~36,7° (estimated decimals)
at 40° lat: reading ~42,3° (estimated decimals)

relative quiet sea, I got good readings.


the measurements are quite good in lower part of screen - getting a little bigger on higher part.
I could try to use this as offsets for the 1280x1024 sextant.

Again, everything above 45° is off limits, so you could navigate by only using stars with elevations <45° - something to consider.

Another thing, do you know where I can get hold of that 1280x1024 utility - I'll have to try it out to get more accurate readings

I can look up and down like anyone else, but problem is the sextant keeps its screen position. It's not possible to "lock" the bottom scale on the horizon and then look up to shoot higher stars. I guess that's the way the dragging works - chronometer also stays on same screen position wherevever you go.

For higher res I use kegety's solution for WinXP SP2. you should follow this link if you want to try:
