Default Ship sank out of fear!

Anyone ever have this happen to you?

In the Mittelmeer, going from La Spezia to CJ22 in May of 1943 I was in the northwest corner of square CN29, doing an end-around on a Coastal Merchant. Keeping my distance, I was setting up a track (while on the surface, keeping my distance) so that I could learn his true course, when his icon changed into a shipwreck icon. I think I was at 8x TC. He must have spotted me, and scuttled his ship out of fear!

When I red your story, the first thing that came into my mind was Asterix and theirs beloved friends the vikings.

Back to the essential in your story

It has happen to me too. Why it is so I don't know

Was it in extremely bad weather? Or perhaps a mine? These things can sink merchants.

I have had this experience a few times...actually it is pretty frustrating. One time it was the weather as it was nasty and in the scope I could see the ship floundering. In another instance it was friendly forces (in this case an air strike), I was approaching and popped my scope up to see that the merchant was burning...wtf!? he was just fine a minute ago, a couple minutes later I see splashes...hey its the luftwaffe! I also think mines and friendly surface ships also can take out your prey if they get the chance

Doubt it was a mine (I'm running stock with the 1.4 patch), and the weather was beautiful, nice calm seas, no precip. Lookouts didn't spot any aircraft, Luftwaffe or otherwise, so I don't think it was that.

Strange game. The only winning move is not to play...

He submerged to avoid detection. I hate it when they do that.

The important question is ... did you get credit for the sinking?

Nope. I was kind of hoping that I would, but no dice. Oh well.

Or bernards brother was taking a bath on that ship. Last words were most likely something in the line of "I'll just unplug the baththub!" which was followed by the sound of water rushing in.

My bet is he sank due to damage and/or the weather.

And there is indeed one crew that doesn't need Bernard to sink
