Default What color is the shallow/coastal atlantic ocean?

What color is the shallow/coastal atlantic ocean?

It's pale green here in Asiatic.

I'm asking because i want to find a suitable color for the base of my u-boat model.
I don't want to pick dark blue because the color the model's lower hull is dark blue so it might inhibit the model display.

Thx

My experience is that the Atlantic is a dark blue.

Cheers,
David

On a sunny day it's a dark blue, more toward the green end rather than purplish.

On a cloudy day, or stormy, it's either medium gray-green or a steel gray.

In general it tends to be a bit darker and less saturated than the other seas I've seen. (and distinctly different from the Mediterranian... I was startled at how purple that was, a "wine-dark sea" indeed!)

I just noticed you're in Jakarta... I was there in 1990, had a great time touring Java. I got a chance to see the ocean on the south side of the island, and it wasn't a whole lot different looking to me than the Atlantic on a sunny day.

I've never been to the southern side of the island. But i do know that the southern beaches have got the worst/most dangerous waves of all.

Click for larger view.

That is near Halifax, about mid-March. Not really stormy but not really placid either. As you can see it is quite blue but can appear green in shallow spots.

Thx fatty. I've noticed from your and several other pics that the green spots are usually confined up to a few meters from the beach lines.

Down by Key West is clear blue. And you can see straight to the bottom. It's really beautiful. The Chesapeake Bay is muddy brown until you get down by Norfolk and it turns blue-grey.

Northern Atlantic close to shore is brown/green as opposed to blue. Various reasons for this. Run off from large rivers and so on causing silt and contrary to most peoples idea cold waters actually contain more nutrients and host more life than warm tropical waters. The result of this is lots of plankton causing a green colour and visibility of about 2-3m maximum.

The further you go offshore the less plankton and run-off is there so the water becomes more blue with a corresponding increase in visibility.

However around coasts for about least 10 miles or more in some areas the north Atlantic is brown/green when viewed from underwater but can appear a dark grey on the surface. You've got to go a long way offshore in the northern atlantic generally to get the traditional deep clear blue water.

Edit:- Some examples

All the above taken within 5 miles of the coast of the uk.

Even 30 miles out its still a green tinge.

Where in the Atlantic did you find the mermaid? 5 miles off the UK coast in what direction?
