Default ot Destroyer sim

I would love to play a destroyer sim. My grandfather was on the USS Bell Fletcher class during WWII. The Bell accidentally rammed the Hornet in the rear while refueling and the crew of the Hornet would wave away the Bell whenever she got close to the Hornet.:rotfl:

The only destroyer sim taking place during WWII is Destroyer Command. The graphics are outdated by modern standards but it's still fun to play.

Quite a bit, actually, and many of the SH2 mods work with it as well. I plan on playing several SH3 careers simultaneously until December 1941, then adding SH4 careers. If there is no DC2 by then I'll be digging out the original to play along with them.

I wonder how a destroyer command 2 would turn out?

To be honist i never played the first one..... doesnt seem over interesting taking control of a single destroyer, but i could be wrong. My views on commanding a destroyer are based on playing DWs destroyer which never really led to much action

The thing with being a destroyer captain is you can't be the lone wolf or ace like in a submarine or fighter sim. You're usually part of a squadron or flotilla or task force and have to act and steam in concert with your mates. Especially in a surface action. Would work best in multi-player format.

Destroyer Command had scripted mission, as in SH2, but with a surface ship game it seemed okay, since they didn't get orders to sail into enemy territory alone and "Sink 'em all!"

In DC you had missions starting at Norfolk, escorting a task-force to Panama (all the while looking for nasty German u-boats, escorting tankers across the Pacific, joining a Dutch cruiser task-force through a nasty fight with Japanese surface forces (I never survived that one). Later on you took command of destroyer squadrons. Modders made some cool mini-campaigns for it, including ones where you ran Battleship groups, even Japanese; it was fun.

I seem to remember when I was a destroyer leader and new to DC my destroyer squadron ran off without me once. Rather deflating to one's ego.

The first time I joined the back of the Dutch group I couldn't keep up. I either went too fast or too slow. Then I finally found out about the "Join Group" button.

I think I would like to play an updated DC. I never tried the first, though, but would like to try a revamped game now. I hope they come out with one soon.

By updated I don't mean modern....still WWII.

The absolute best part about it was the interplay with SH2. The 4x4 online battles were fantastic. If a DC2 is made I hope there will be British voices and a modified SH3 to go with it. That would be this old sailor's heaven.

And there should be more than American destroyers this time. I may not be too keen on Japanese subs...but their destroyers with the Long Lance torpedoes (and reloads, something US tin cans didn't have) would be a formidable weapon to command.

I re-installed DC today, boy I sure do wish someone would make another WWII or WWI surface combat sim. Wishful thinking i guess.

There are signs that a new Destroyer Command may actually occur, as shown in this post by the devteam from the SH4 Q&A...

"TheRealPotoroo: Will there be an updated Destroyer Command that it will be compatible with?
A: It's certainly a possibility that we are considering. But in any case, it won't be an updated version of Destroyer Command, but rather a completely new game with similar design and technology improvements as SH3 was over 2."
