I thought about building it in to the mission as radio transmission
but decided that this approach would be unique, novel, effective
and maybe easier.

So I decided to make a Surface Combat Training ogg
for the training mission.

A more fun way to get the correct pronunciation would have been to boot up SH3 and give an order. The first thing they say is "Jawhol, Herr Kaleun".

MM: took German Language as an elective in university, dropped it ( to much pressure, lots of " in front of the class trying to speak it " time
If only I would have known then about the whole Silent Hunter thing.

Yup, one of the reasons I find this game so immersive is those german voices. With the english subtitles it works perfectly.

I think so too, the german language sounds authentic and very martial... but maybe german speaking people just can't stand to listen to it much the same way tha the rest of us can't stand the horribly terrible english voice acting in the game . Can any german speaking person post on this?

I'm from the U.S. so I think the "English" voices in SH 3 are just fine but if your from the UK then I understand why you don't care for it.
But then again I don't know for maybe "UBI" had different english for U.S. sales than UK sales ?

I'm U.S. born but German descendant, was raised ( mostly ) by full German grandparents whom spoke German when I was around if they did not want me to understand, otherwise allways English. I hated the German language for many years because of that, now in later years I've found to like it and speak some german but not much.

Hello Dantenoc,

the German voices are ok in my opinion. I would say the speakers are native. You don't hear any accent. The voices also fit quite well, except for one speaker which has a very high voice, which sounds a bit childish. Well, some of the crew, actually may have been very young...

On the other hand it would have been nice to have some accents, as in "Das Boot", where you hear that the crew is assembled from different parts of Germany (e.g. Bavaria) or even Austria.

Cheers!
Mr. Fleck

Well they sound a bit too assiduous and snappy for my taste and haven't different dialects. But it's not that bad, I have heard worse in other games and after all it's a Nazi-Tube . Weren't it the guys from "Frontflottille" who modded the Wav's and thereby unintentionally put in thier various different german dilalects?

Ah well, and the "Ka" in Kaleun is with an "A" like in "Car" or "Carl", so it's "Ca-loin".

Cheers,
AndyW

I always find game voices to be a little "stilted", or artificial. I do remember on German Destroyer Command player asking if some American player could send him a set of US files, since according to him the German version of the game had German voices with American accents, and he'd rather have the real thing, no matter how flat they sounded! Hey, everybody likes immersion!
