Curious about the origin of radar signals (a bad habit generally speaking), I met a task force of 6 ships in the Mediterranean : 3 destroyers escorting 2 Dido and one Fidji light cruisers. Made a very cautious final approach at periscope depth (it was around noon), during which BTW I was able to watch the suicidal attack of 2 italian planes over the group.
![]() Anyway, I wasn't either in such a good day in my choices that day... My 4 bow torps only brought me one Dido : fired 2 on the Fidji without success, and also missed the second Dido with my last fore tube. ![]() ![]() Well, the torpedo in the stern tube was already set at 2 meters deep, and I only had a couple of seconds left before the pericope was submerged : silly, but I suddenly decided to fire it in the raised fingers' general direction ; then crash dived, the engines flank ahead. One or two minutes later... nuts ! Missed again, and another torp wasted. Well then, that's life ; decided to calm down and think about my skin then. Avoided the 1st series of grenades during several minutes, went down to 180 meters, ordered silent running, set speed to 2 knots and made some 90° turns. Next grenades were close, but no cigar... But 2 destroyers were now hunting, one almost stopped and listening : quite unpleasant situation, especially considering my results. More minutes passed, when a different "boom !" occured among the explosions of grenades : the last torpedo I almost forgot at that time ! By chance, it was an acoustic one... ![]() ![]() Now those among you who will be able to guess what finger I showed to my screen when seeing the scene below (Fidji sinking), will win... 10 points renown ! :rotfl: ![]() |
