close duels

I'm just wondering how close can you get to enemy submarine without being spotted in DW? Did you manage to stay close behind enemy's back long enough to complete TMA and without revealing own presence until he sees a torpedo is coming and it's too late for him to escape? This question is maybe a naive one but I've just started playing DW and I'm curious

If the submarine is going too fast, and the acoustics are bad, he probably won't see you at all.

I've gotten close enough that if you put on 'truth', you could see the submerged sub next to mine. (I was in a kilo)

In multiplayer, I've done it once without being detected. I positioned my sub on the opposite side of the layer and got behind him. Only takes a couple seconds for the torpedo to impact the enemy sub.

My funnest one was when I decided to charge an akula with my seawolf in a multiplayer battle. I was pretty close to him at the time. I fired 2 torpedoes to run just ahead of me. My enemy fired some torpedoes of his own, turned tail and ran. It sent shivers down my spine when I went to HFAS and saw one of his torps go right past me. I shut down my torps because I didn't want to kill him yet. I finally caught up to him and got behind him. When he finally slowed, I was around 120yds behind him. He never had a clue, and couldn't find me on any of his sensors.

I messaged him that I was behind him, then fired off a warning shot. We then went for a wild ride as he tried to shake me off his tail. I fired a few more torpedoes that were meant to kill him. None of them did because I had forgot to set the floor from the default setting (we were 1,800ft down) . I figured out what was wrong, then set up the next torpedo correctly. Just as I was about to fire, the game ended because the mission's time limit was up.

You should hear my story about when I was surrounded by torpedoes that were locked onto me, and I survived!

I have gotten close enough in MP to a sub twice that I was able to classify them based on their silhouette on high freq active sonar. Both times were complete accidents; the first inclination I had that a boat was there was when I got bored and clicked on the high freq and saw a blip

Great, I hoped such situations were possible in DW! It's cool they are! Thanks for your stories. I'm eager to do this myself . Oh my, what a great game!

I nearly rear ended an Oscar II SSGN I was trailing in my Kilo the other day. Oh you can get real close!

There was a tale going round in USN that one sub found a ruskie near enough the surface for light to penetrate so she went right under the ruskie and took photos.

Yeah .. but in DW you can't see submerged contacts with periscope, so this is impossible to simulate. You can however do nice underwater snapshots of surface boats, maybe even surfaced subs (will try).
Anyway to get close you need noisy see. Seastate 3 and more.
