Not sure if anything has been posted about this here before but check this link out
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=165529 In 1942 5 midget subs were launched not fare off the eastern Australian coast to target Australian and American ships anchored in Sydney Harbour. Only 3 made it into the harbour, two were sunk in the harbour and the one mentioned in this article seen on Australian TV last Sunday was missing presumed sunk somewhere off the coast. An interesting story about how this group of amateur divers found the wreck missing for 64 years! |

Slight correction: 5 I-Class subs lauched three midget subs against Sydney, Two of the I-class subs carried aircraft.
I'm wondering if they will raise the sub. It has been decared a war grave, so it cant be touched or interfeared with. Some of the relatives of the two japanese want the bodies recovered. I know the return of the ashes of the other submariners who were killed in the attack has been considered a mark of respect by the Japanese (they were returned during the war) |
