I have just upgraded to this boat and found it to not be able to maintain depth at less than 5 knots. She just slowly sinks about a foot a minute. Is this the normal charateristic of this boat , or is it my green crew? Example, while trying to evade tin cans, I attempted to remain at 140 m, but unless I was movng faster than 5 knots, I would sink down.

You may be experiencing the "Crash Dive Blues." This refers to if you crash dive but do not complete the dive. The buoyancy is wack and the boat will not stay at depth properly unless you do another crash dive and complete it.

Don't know if it has been fixed, even in GWX. BTW, I never liked the IX. Too big and fat!

I tried a crash dive and found it went down to 140m then hovered level. just to macke sure, I switched to SR and watched as the time was increased to +500. Level she stayed. so i will accept your idea of the incomplete crash dive as the problem. Thanks for the help.

It's a slow bugger at diving, but too strong to be considered a pig. Consider it a boar.

IX is a longe range boat. Its bigger than the other boats (VII and such) so that is why it takes so long to dive.
I have one IX campaign right now that I am running. I only go where the depth is over 250m. The boat is too big for shallow depths to hide. I like it. Its fast and carries allot of fuel and eels to make hunting very intersting.

IX is a great boat. It has a long range so you can reach the American coast and the tip of Africa. It carries loads of torpedoes, hence more kills, more tonnage and more renown. It's a bit slow in diving but nothing you cannot manage. Usually you stay away from shallow areas as one tends to hunt in the ocean with it.
As far as the buoyancy issue you're refering to I don't know. I never experienced it and I've used the IXC quite a lot. I had no problem in maintaining depth even at 3 knots. Are you sure you're not seeing either 'crash dive blues' as said before or heavy seas effects???

My question is how much different is the deck gun on the IX? Is it a almightly destroyer of fishing boats or just a big hunk of steel on your deck.

Another big advantage of the IXB is its 37mm gun. It is a blast to shoot and is absolute murder on PT Boats. I've used it to sink Small Coastal vessels, Coastal Tankers, Tug Boats, to take out the searchlight on a couple Flower Corvettes, and to finish off a number of larger ships. I'm going to send a couple fellows off for flak gun training to increase the rate of fire. Overall, the IXB might not be as maneuverable, but its longer range, higher surface speed, increased torpedoes, and more effective deck gun armament make it a far more effective warship than the VII. All in my opinion, of course. ![]()
