Default Got an installation error that I can't overcome.

When installing this game I get "Error 1335. The cabinet file 'Data11.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. The could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package."

Abort, Retry, Ignore.

I have searched several places including here, and I can't find a solution that works.

I have tried installing after copying the DVD contents to my hard drive.

I have reinitialized the windows installer.

I have cleaned the DVD, and I also went out and bought a new copy, so I have two to work with.

I just changed my mobo and my GPU, but everything seems to be working ok.

Is there any other solutions out there I have missed?

Please help, I love this game, and upgrades were specifically so I can play it. I'm really hurtin' here.

Try installing to a different directory, not the default one provided by the installer. That worked for me when all else failed. Good luck.

Are you trying to install by copying the entire contents of the CD to your hard drive, and then installing from the HD? I don't think that will work, because of the copy protection software that is an integral part of SHIII.

Install from the CD drive and see if that helps.

I have tried from the DVD-ROM drive and tried copying the contents to the HD then installing. Other people have said that worked.

I do have a CD-ROM that I haven't tried yet. I will try that tonight.

Have you tried runningone of those CD / DVD Drive cleaning disks? It COULD just be that the read "eye" in your drive is starting to fail, hopefully only because it may be a little dirty!

Just an idea that might work!

I have a "cd cleaning disk," the kind that has the very small brushes on it. Tried that, already, but it didn't work either.

Anti-Virus program running? Hwg, just an idea ...

Have you tried to 'right-click' the file and select open to check contents?
Just to see if you can read it/check integrity ...

Do you have enough memory/disk space to uncompress the file
(it's huge, 1.2 GB).

Is your Windows 'patched' up? Latest bugfixes etc?

IF THE ERROR CODE IS 1335.

Then you have a Windows Installer error that can occur for different cabinet file names located on the installation media (usually a CD/DVD). This issue can be caused by a dirty CD-ROM disk or CD-ROM read issues. This issue can also occur if the installation files are corrupt.
If the suggestions here do not resolve the error, the files may have been corrupted. If this is the case, your software vendor should be contacted to get a new or updated copy of the installation files.
Fix

One or more of the following suggestions might help with this issue:
  1. Reboot the machine and try the installation again.
  2. Clean the CD-ROM. Use a soft cloth to gently clean the disc.
  3. Run the install locally by copying the installation files to your local hard drive.
    1. Using Windows Explorer browse to the location of the installation files. For example, if the installation is on a CD, browse to the CD-ROM drive:
    2. Copy all the contents of the installation location.
    3. Temporarily paste them to a location on your local hard drive. For example, the Desktop.
    4. Run the install file, for example, setup.exe or install.exe.
That is it...........If all else fails put the CD/DVD IN fridge for an hour on bottom shelf then try it. I know it sounds odd but it seems to work some times.

Yes....that always sounds a strange suggestion, but it can work. Similarly, the same methos can be used to get a bit more "life" from a dying Hard Drive! An hour or so in a cold fridge can sometimes allow the drive to run for long enough to get your valuable data off!!

Tried installation with anti-virus software/firewall disabled. That didn't work.

@Narcosis

Tried all that you have suggested. See first post. I will try your freezer trick though, when I get home tonight.

The new copy that I purchased installed on to my laptop. I didn't run it as the laptop wouldn't be able to, but the patch installed successfully. Previously, when I got a successful installation on my main computer, running the patch would result in some sort of error, so I am thinking that this is a sign that the new disk is ok. When I get a successful installation on the big computer, it seems that it will go through the "install motions," but will wind up with a bunch of corrupted files.

Here is what I will attempt tonight:

1. Try to install from the other reader on the computer.

2. Try to install after sticking the disk in the freezer for a couple of hours.

3. I am going to try and "explore" the cabinet files, and see if the computer will let me.

4. Dust the inside of the readers, to see if there is anything in there that is causing the issue.

5. (Maybe) Reinstall windows.

Any other suggestions?

Just a thought:hmm:

Are you having any other problems with game installations? You mentioned that you changed your mother board.

Is there a bios update for the new mobo and is there a firmware update for your rom drive.

I have had several similar issues. Good game, been buffing myself up for weeks to get it to work, then ...

I don't know what else might be wrong.

MAybe I suggest you change your HD. Maybe that is the problem. Or try reinstalling Windows, maybe some invisible file will reapear and all will be fine (happened to me once. Game would work, didn't have the time to get it changed for another game. Game was forgetten, and when I was searching for somehing to play, BANG!!! found the game, installed it and it worked fine It might just have been a miracle of sorts!).

The frezzer thingy sounds strange and cold, but if I'll ever have a dying HD (I'm sure one of my HD's is on the death bed), I'll use your techique!

My last two thoughts


(1) TRY THIS:


Click Start
then Click on run

Type the name regedit, select software(it will be in the yellow folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) and then press "CTRL" & "F" keys.

What you are looking for is any enteries of the game that you have had on your system. Type the game title and find all the enteries for Silent Hunter.
And clean them off your system.

IF you use XP and if problem is happening on other CD/DVDs

you may need to make sure that the Windows Installer Service is properly installed on your computer. Installations that are based on the Windows Installer Service require the MSI engine to be installed properly to ensure smooth installation. Most installations based on the Windows Installer Service automatically install the MSI engine on the computer prior to running the installation. In case of an error or other unexpected behavior, you may need to install the MSI engine manually.

Note: Windows XP already contains Windows Installer version 2.0. Thus, you should not have to install the Windows Installer Service (MSI engine) on Windows XP.

As you have a problem, reinstall windows XP may help, do not format.
