Default SH3 or DW?

In your opinions, which one of these games do you like better? And why?

Silent Hunter 3 or Dangerous Waters

Sorry. I've been playing SH3 alot and haven't tried DW yet is the reason I asked. I was thinking of buying DW's though but wanted a few opinions first.

DW needs more knowing, more thinking, and there is very little of watching and enjoying the scenery.

Welcome onboard, anyway.

But there is sub vs sub in DW right? That's one thing that Silent Hunter lacks because of the timeline that it's in.

Hi

The best way of working out whether you would like dangourous waters is to look at how you play Silent Hunter III

To make SHIII in any way resemble the type of game that Dangrous Waters is, you would have to play with the realism set to at least 92-96%, if not 100%. I would also expect that a SHIII player who would like DW would find the idea of disabling the notepad next to the periscope and manually plotting firing solutions exciting (because thats what you will be doing in DW). If that doesn't appeal, then I think its fair to say DW would not be for you.

Saying that, it does have the fabled Submarine vs Submarine combat, and there are a number of people up for a mulitplayer hookup.

Depends on my mood. Silent Hunter 3 I play for action. This isn't to say that it's SubQuake, but there is definitely a lost more eye candy and glitz. The command decisions tend (for me at least) to be much more simple. See convoy, pursue convoy, attack convoy, sneak away from convoy. Plus the technology depicted by the game is much simpler to understand and employ.

Dangerous Waters is much more of a thinking process. You really have to put a lot of thought into the capabilities and deficiencies of your selected platform. Sometimes you have to make unconventional decisions, such as the time (in MP) I had to drift, dead in the water, for close to a half-hour while I reloaded my torpedo tubes onboard the frigate. Or the calculated risk involved in shooting at someone you aren't 100% sure is a enemy.

I love SH3 and can't wait for SH4. But DW is the cream of the crop for me. For me it is the best naval sim out there. The fact that you can play as 4 different submarines (nuke/diesel), a surface warship, and two air platforms gives you so much playability.

My favorite part about DanWat was where you don't know if your contact is reliable. it was a splendid and elegant gimmick and i'm supprised sub games could get along without it before it was invented.

It is same question like do you prefer 4X4 races or F1...
BOTH has its own capabilities and advantages..

You could have a look at my Landlubber Guide. It should give you an idea, what DW is about...

I was also an SHIII Player before i started DW. SHIII has much better graphics but i get bored. Because always the same kind of Action and the poor WWII Technology.
Then i downloaded the DW Demo. My first opinion was "Wow thats what i have searched for" But after a few minutes "omfg, that game is hard to learn".
But then i found an German Tutorial how is really really great and helps me to handle more and more stations

http://www.space-port.de/dw/index.html (if u are German

So my opinion is if u are ready for an complex game that needs a lot of learning then play DW. (try the Demo first then u see )

Sure man, there is sub vs sub. DW is about killing subs, not playing subs (as SH3). But most playable platforms are subs, so sub vs. sub is the most common thing in DW. Don't worry.

The thing is the games are not even comparable. They simulate two entirely different things, so you can't say one is better than the other.
SH3 isn't even a subsim, it's a U-Boat sim. A U-Boat is just a torpedo boat that is capable of submerging for short periods.

As has been mentioned before they are both completely different sims. I have both (as well as Sub Command) and they are excellent in their own way. At the moment I'm into SHIII and haven't played DW for some time. To be honest if subs are your thing, I would recommend Sub Command over DW especially since the SCX mod makes the game much more appealing with more and better models than the stock version as well as major improvements to the other aspects of the sim. Having said that if you want to use the other platforms that DW offers then thats the one to go for. Whether its DW or SC be prepared to read the manual and learn a lot more than is required for SHIII.
