When should i upgrade to the IXB or C?

I have just enough renown to get the IXB should i wait for the IXC? currently mid 1942 in my career.

ALthough the differences are minor, the C has a bit more fuel. So id wait for a C. If your planning on going drumbeating, you'll have missed most of the free shipping by the time you get over there i think. Depends on the mod really.

If you want to play with 22 torpodoes instead of 14 and have the ability to go about anywhere, then I'd say change as soon as you can.

Yeah, upgrade now and if you have any renoun leftover, get Decoys too. They'll save your bacon in a tight situation.

Next upgrade I'd recommend after the above would be the Tyrpe IX-D/2. 26 torpedos and longrange hunting. Maybe she doesn't dive as fast as the others but she's one mean U-boat.
