Default SOSUS Article

I thought you guys might find this interesting. So far, it's one of the best articles I've been able to find in public literature about SOSUS and the IUSS.

That must mean it's old and unused long enough to be De-Classified now....

Not all of SOSUS is unused and an awful lot about IUSS is still classified, on account of it still being in use. They've held on to arrays that they think are still useful. A lot of the closings of shore facilities was due to improved technology. With information technology being what it is today, you just don't need as many facilities as close to the arrays as you used to.

I'm also fascinated by how quick everyone outside of the undersea warfare world dismisses the son-of-SOSUS: FDS and and ADS. I think the article makes a brief mention of FDS, and ADS is a future system. ADS is essentially just SOSUS but it's mobile, so you can drop it in the water at whatever point is convenient and create a "tripwire." It's supposed to be a part of the LCS or JHSV. FDS is operational today, and almost everything about it that you don't see on globalsecurity.org is secret.

I guess because they're not as famous, it doesn't have the name recognition. IUSS is pretty cool, though, I think, because it's one of those things that make you say, "so THAT's what it means to be THE superpower."

Interesting... and 'beyond my pay grade' ... Still... if something is 'public'... it's gotta be pretty...something....
