Default torpedo damage

ok last newbie question. While reading Iron Coffins they make it sound as if one torpedo will destroy a ship in seconds. My question is how come in SHIII I am having trouble sinking ships period with two shots. I am playing with no mods right now. Thanks for the help.

I've read of ships blowing up and sinking instantly. I've also read of ships taking six torpedoes and five hours to sink, for no apparent reason. It depends on the type as well. Yamato took 19 torpedoes and 20 bombs, more or less.

It depends on where they are hit, what type of ship they are, and some other factors. Bigger ships typically take 2-3 torpedoes to sink.

It depends on lots of things. I think in this game there is a random factor built in because I have hit large cargoes that have split in two from 1 fish, but I've also had the same type ship require 5 fish and a deck gun.
Just last night, I took out a large tanker with one shot, but the tramp steamer following took three.
just be patient, I have read stories from guys who have used up all their fish on 1 ship and it still didn't go under

Yes, once I used six or more on a Liberty ship – and even then it didn't sink, so I gave up and went to hunt elsewhere.

But even with the Greywolves mod you will sink a significant number with just one torpedo.

In unmodded SH3, try aiming just under the front of the bridge. Use a magnetic pistol on C2s, an impact pistol on C3s.

I seem to remember tha tankers seemed to light up if you hit them just about anywhere amidships. And I've heard a good place to aim for is just in front of the smokestack in the rear.

Good hunting!

I have managed to sink a C2 with a single torpedo, but usually it takes atleast two or three, I remember one ship that took five and still refused to sink. I think it was carrying cork, or life jackets...

Sometimes ships just won't sink:

The vulnerability manual mod (found here: http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/p...ullvulnmod.zip ) will replace your current recognition manual with one that marks the fuel bunkers, engine rooms, ammo stores, and propulsion systems of all the ships in the game. Basically it shows you the places on the ship that makes 'em blow up real good with a well placed single torpedo shot

On Topic: If your torpedo hits an Sweat spot of the ship it will sink with one single torpedo, mostly I manage to cripple them heavy so I have to finsih them of with the deck gun Love that , Fire Torpedo, hit Surface and man the Deck gun Yarrrrrr and blow him to kingdom come.

That is some picture of damage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just goes to show you that water tight doors and bulkheads will keep a ship afloat. With that said and the picture present, the SH3 merchants are modelled as it they have bulkheads and sections. So if you keep sending in torpedos to the same spot, it is more or less a waste as that section is already flooding. Each torpedo should hit different sections of the ship thus in theory opening up the ship to sea more!
