Police believe he had just left the nearby Firbank pub to make a phone call before he was attacked.
The victim was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital where he is said to be in a stable condition.
Greater Manchester Police are appealing for anyone who knows anything about the attack to come forward.

Mayhap there ought to be somebody working as a proof reader at the beeb these days?
Failing that, watch out for them phone boxes people... they're getting some payback for all of the times they were vandalised. Might have known it was a mancunian phone box
