Default Tidal changes..

Here is a question to all of the excellent modders out there:

Is there some way to make tidal change mods to SHIII?
Would be cool if you had to check the tidal charts before you entered shallow water...

Even now I don;t go into a port if the wind is high. The conning tower pops up adn all the DDs in the world get after you.

with the seasonal waves from sh3 comander ... the u-boat is pushed to the bottom so hard in shallow waters , that most of the times i dont even dare , i tried to go to scapa in a storm, damage was so bad that i had to return to base ...

i think it would be a little too much detail for me ...

Just at periscope depth in a storm when attacking a convoy almost done for me as my tower kept poping above the surface and catch the attention of the dreaded DD's now im always carefull to only attack when its not to stormy.

Default tide

Great replys, guys!!

I'm thinking about (for example) Scapa flow. Was it possible to enter the eastern approach (trough the narrow strait with the shipwrecks) when the water was low? Or was it possible only in high tide? (Would be nervwrecking to finish off some niiiice targets in SHIII, just to discover that your way out of there is in too shallow waters, and the DD's are approaching fast behind you....)

Tide was a very important factor in the Scapa raid. The raid was timed to coincide with a spring (or neap, or something - I'm not very good at this stuff) tide, both during entry and exit from the harbour.

Default tide

@ Floater: Thanx for the info, mate!

Wish SHIII (or maybe SHIV) could implement such tidal behaviour..
Would give us another factor to consider when doing those cool raids...

I am hoping that SHIV will add a whole series of oceanic and physical improvements. One of my pet peeves is that the boat, after making a prolonged turn with the rudder hard over, stops it's turn instantly on reaching midships. Clearly, you should have to steer in the opposite direction to avoid 'skidding'. Sonalysts did it in DW, so it should not be hard to implement.

How come I never thought of low and high tides? It'd be so awesome!

And maybe not that difficult to script either. Just raise/lower water level. It sounds easy (but of course, it can be a lot harder than it sounds...).

Put it in the SHIV suggestion thread.

From http://www.u47.org/english/u47_sca.asp :

'The date set (for) what became known as Operation Order North Sea No. 16 was the night of 13/14 October, when both periods of slack water would take place during the hours of darkness. U-47 was set to leave port on the preceding Sunday, 8 October. The selection of the dates was not lost on Endrass [Prien's 1WO at the time] - as well as casting off on a Sunday, the mission had been timed for Friday the thirteenth. If anything was to test that age-old superstition, this was going to be it.'

And many other undertakings.

The Normandie landings, for example, were timed so that the tide would be low at the time of the landings.

Default tide

I've posted this in SHIV wish list, lets hope and pray... Considering the historical examples you guys mentions, its strange that SHIII developers didn't think of tidal changes. They were important, no doubt.
