Thanks Neal - it looks like Buffs worth buffing-up on.

Buff makes for amused reading, but from what I've read so far, he's a little too biased to be genuinely interesting. For example, take this line:

Quote:
What do China's non-transparent leaders see as the end state of this manic (military) buildup?
I don't know, but considering the US has the biggest military expenditure in the world and possesses the most offensively oriented military in the world (euphemistically called "power projection"), I personally bristle every time an American whines at someone elses' purchases, of defensive or even offensive equipment.

I've done his Shkval page. I also notice he spends another page just crowing over the Mk 48. Honestly, by now he's getting a bit tiring to read.

No bias or flak detracts from Buffs assessment of the strategic changes inherent in the 'New Artic' geo-politics. He may overstate his case - not unfamiliar from those who however 'non-partisan' in analysis are nevertheless committed to seeking funding.

However his analysis of the role changes necessary in submarine operations merit attention. Whether you buy his 'New Frontier' or 'backdoor' a new look at procedures under thin ice are called for in an area of increasing potential confrontation.

As mission designers let hope that others will follow SeaQueens ' Kara Sea 'example in refocusing on under ice operations or the 'thin ice' of Okhutsk' (Writer + MaHuJa)

A separate strategic consideration, so posted likewise.

''For instance, enemy-controlled tramp steamer, fitted with camouflaged, make-shift IRBM launchers, might sneak close
through this same New Artic 'back-door.'

Similarly currently potential terrorist action using 'deephold' merchant vessels must pose an immense naval challenge for those engaged in existing deep water operations.

It is a great pity that SA does not provide clandestine activity platforms even in the simplistic form of modified fishing boats (from the 60s !)
