Any starting sub in an available flotilla is historically correct in either supermod. The VIIb out of Wilhelmshaven is fine.

I'm sorry you don't like the Canal; I think it's one of the most fun parts of my patrols.

I like the Canal, but is boring to cross it at slow speed, yesterday I crossed all the canal at 128TC, and when I exit to open sea, unexplicablily crashed with a ship!! I have to re-start again!! Only If I can erase the ships inside the canal

With my Grey Wolves installation I started with my Type IIA, U-13, out of 1st Flotilla, Kiel. I just love the Kiel canal and my Type II but thats me. If you want more of a challenge, play with the Type II at 100% out of Kiel...boy thats so enjoyable when you hit a ship just off the eastern coast of Britain

IIA all da vay,
I start off with this boat usually your get 2 patrols sometimes 3 out of it before you can get the VIIB. The IIA is very limited, buggar all torpedos (5), no deckgun, limted range and a poxy surface speed yet its a little beast in its own respect and would have no trouble in sinking a BB or carrier if given the chance - mind you your have no torps left after you do. The IIA is the mini mina of the Uboats. Im still waiting to get my hands on a XXI, im trying to do a full career before i get her. Gotta stop starting new careers then maybe i will!

In 39 there were few type VIIs and the IIs were the standard as the U-flotillas were not being funded very much because Hitler had a big hard on for battleships which absorbed most of the naval budget. So in 39 a II was a very likely assignment. By 40 or 41 the VII was more common and the standard. But it's all up to your choosing. If you really want no choice in the matter just join the Wolves at War and get a number and type assigned to you.

I love the Type II it has great advantages. In the time it takes to complete a patrol with a type VII you can have 3 completed with a type II. The advantage is that in the same amount of time you have a more qualified crew! Stay in a type II until the move to France then with your uber qualified crew take over a type VII. The second advantage is that you do not have the annoying commute from Germany over to Scotland and finnaly in the Atlantic. If you switch to type VII after the move to France then Deployment is a breeze you are in position before you know it!

Just my 2 cents
Hope this helps

I think the young but wise Kaleun will choose a Typ IIA for the start of the war in order to leardn from its disadvantages and advantages.

It will help him learn how to save fuel and spare torpedos. The young Kaleun, nevertheless should not be carried out by the fact that with the Typ II he will probably get away with easy harbor raids and easy escape from depth charges, since one day he will command a Typ IXC or even a Typ IX/D2...
