Is there a way to speed up the process of getting through it? The time acceleration works only up to x4/x8 (sometimes more but for a very short period of time) - takes me over an hour to get through the channel!!!

Using SH3CMDR is the best thing to do as Dowly pointed out.You could probably get the same result by medling with some cfg's but it's much easyer with the CMDR and there's no chance to screw things up.

Yes, just after you get out of the canal, these is a jetty with a lighthouse sticking out into the channel about halfway out, on the North side. There is also one at the end of the canal, but it doesn't stick out too much
