Default Plextor Rolls out CD/DVD destroyer!

I think I want one of these. 6 minutes isn't bad either. To make your hard drive safe take a (according to the DoD - to make it safe from an electron microscope) 7 times overwrite with random bit patterns and takes a lot longer to do.

So if you bank on your computer and you don't want theives at your data (I've had my identity stolen twice alread in my life so having things like this is practically mandatory), this looks like a good thing to add to my collection fo shredders and data eliminators.

Plexeraser, Mess-up with your DVD and CD Plextor will soon ship a new kind of DVD/CD combo, the PLEXERASER, which has ONLY one function, to destroy the data stocked on the DVD/CD... Plextor state that you will only need 6 minutes to completely erase ALL data on a DVD or a CD... which is somehow quite long if your local Police decided to knock at the door.

Cool little show, I wonder how many you could do at one time?

I can think of several cheaper, faster, low tech methods.

My current method involves breaking it, but this further complicates the idea by pitting the surface - its near foolproof where a broken CD can still be read by a tech savvy person with motivation.

The idea somehow gives me a bad feeling, uber copy protection with the right software. Don't let the guys at Starforce see this thread. And if I bought one, I'd get it at Walmart. wink

I prefer the microwave. But, realistically speaking, this thing does a 100% job, whereas the microwave does about a 60% job.

If you truely had some super code-word secret information on a disk, it's still possible to pull information off it after a microwave. The microwave will render it unreadable in anything but a disk mastering drive, and even then it will just be a jumble of bits, without any kind of structure or hints. If you were an accountant with really high-dollar customers, yeah. I'd use this over a microwave, even over a shredder.

Interesting, but a niche market.
