I recently re-formatted and re-installed XPhome. Now when I fire up Outlook Express the Windows Messenger starts up as well. Why is that, and how do I disable this ?
Hopefully one of you can help me out Thanks ! |

the XP-switches for some internal fucntions nare dummies only, the one for switching on and off Messenger is such a dummy. you need to disable the Messenger externally with a tool. XP-antispy, for example. Amongst many other useful options it allows to shoot the messenger.http://xp-antispy.org/?lang=en&optio...id=1&Itemid=32

lmao maybe try and turn off the setting in messenger itself that control auto start with windows logon and the 'connect automatically to internet' settings - tools\options\general - see if that has eny effect? also check to see if you 'program files' dir is set to 'read only' in the folder properties/attributes - uncheck and apply to 'all folders & subfolders' - I had a problem with winamp not keeping its skin settings (following an OS reinstall) and unchecking 'read only' seemed to solve this. I guess if that fails threaten your PC with a large fire-axe if it refuses to co-operate ![]()

Again, these switches do not work, and that is well-known info since years. Kill the messenger via XP-Antispy, or another tool like that. There is a reason why such an option is included in such tools. You cannot do it from within Windows.

curious, is this problem only associated with certain editions of windows? I've had XP pro for years and never encountered this problem...

If I delete messenger completely I can not use Windowshelp to log on to a remote computer (to help out my mother when she is stuck again).
I know I had messenger auto-start switched off before without deleting it completely. Now I disabled autostart from messenger itself and in outlook express. It does not autostart with XP but still does autostart with outlook express. Perhape a reboot will help Will try that now |

If you have Administrative Privileges you could go into the Services section of Adminstrative Tools and stop/disable the Windows Messenger system service that way.

Are people aware that there are TWO Messenger coming with windows? One that is Windows Messenger, and one that is named Messenger Service, which is something completely different? I assume Drebbel is aware of that and refers to the first?!
If it is only my copy of Windows, than all these tools have been made by strangers with just my little person in mind! ![]() http://www.chunkypig.com/msn/windows...er_remover.php http://www.soft32.com/download_20927.html http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/R...essenger.shtml What these tools do is probably essentially just what is explained in this short description. http://www.updatexp.com/disable-messenger-msn.html Since I never have used any of the tools I linked to above, I still recommend to use the XP-antispy which I have used since years and can confirm that it works reliable in all it'S many functions. Link in my first reply. Maybe different standards of windows Updates have adressed the issue, and now it is no more an issue. I haven'T checked for that. If Drebbel hasn'T updated his Windows since longer time, he may want to check for that possebility. And I don'T tell people a fourth time to deactivate Messenger from outside the internal Windows options in case the internal functions do not work for them! ![]()

I found the solution. The tool I need to run once is "MessengerDisable.exe", download it for free at http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm
You have various options, as you can see below. One of the options is "prevent messenger from loading with OutlookExpress", and that is just what I need. Works perfect. ![]() |
