You aren't supposed to know exactly what you want to attack in Grey Wolves. It's part of the realism. Turning on God's Eye mode might help you a little, as would pressing K to view the captain's log. The classes of ships sunk are recorded in the Captain's Log, so that may help.

When you installed GW did you also install the Generic Contact Mod from the optional folder?

It makes ship names generic. So instead of seeing the actual ship name, you simply see "contact". As spork542 said, it's part of the realism.

It's also an optional installation, so can only be installed if you physically selected it when installing GW1.1a (assuming you used the auto installer).

You have two options:
1) Use the Recognition manual to help identify ships
2) Re-run the GW1.1a installer (assuming that you have not installed any mods subsequent to GW), ensuring that you do NOT select the "Generic ship contact names" option this time!
