The circle is the visual range.
The circle with a pie shape cut out from the stern is the hydrophone range.
The pie shape on the bow is the active sonar range.

I was told by Cdre Gibs that:

circle at 12000m = Range of main guns
forward arc (approx 270º) at 4000m = Range of Hydrophones
circle at 3000m = Range of Secondary Guns and/or AAA.
forward arc (approx 160º) at 1500m = Range of ASDIC

Distances and angles are taken from NYGM TW 2.0. The stock angles and distances are different, but the idea is the same.

I call it the Circle of Doom when you're not on ur watch.
because I am floating around the Coast of Ireland...and what you guess...an Big ass task force target...REVENGE CRUISERS!!! I,m pissed....Heavy Fog, big waves and raining...now...I was close enough to fire an torpedo...but I couldnt take an clear shot...and also an Destroyers was coming towards me and I was forced to dive 70 meters and when I got on PD again the target was 9 km gone with 21 knots....Scheisse....lost them..but no worry's I know now that i,m going towards Loch Ewe and take a look if there is an Nelson in there (1939)

I have seen the dotted circle occasionally but have not seen the other circle/arcs. Is this in the vanilla? A MOD?

The arcs only appear with warships, not merchants. It's a vanilla feature.

Makes sense - I've just started playing and only have played early careers - mostly single ship contacts.

Do these range-circels appear on armed merchants to show the range of their guns?
