If you go to http://hnsa.org/sound/#i52wire then you can hear actual recordings taken from sonobuoys of an attack upon the Japanese sub I52.
It also has a lot of detail about other sounds used for WW2 sonobuoy/hydrophone operators - such things as slamming hatches, pumps running etc. Very interesting site, apologies to all if this has already been posted (too lazy to do a search). |

That site was pretty cool actually but I now understand why operators needed the intense training. I listened to a few of the recordings and couldn't for the life of me hear the sub they claimed could be "easily heard". Still kinda creepy to listen to actual recordings taken under realistic conditions. Too bad the recordings are from a later era as obviously hearing WWII era hydrophone recordings would be a bit more germane to us.
But nice post anyway and thanks for sharing it with us. |

Great Site, actually while doing some surfing I stumbled across some either 20th century fox or WB sound effect for early subs, they sound wild and if added into the original game ( mixed ) could add some more aspects to the internal life.
If anyone is interested PM me with your email and I can sed them to you to have a listen.

The quality of the 2nd wire is a bit better than the first. If you listen real careful (with headphones) you can hear a faint "chu-chu-chu" sound. That's the sound of the props of the I52.
Later, you hear the Fido dropped and then the loud explosion when it hits the sub. Following the hit, you hear a repetitive "tink-tink" sound. This is the sound of steel rupturing as the hull comes apart under pressure. The I52 has recently been found at 5500m. They are investigating whether they can recover her and return her to Japan. The two tons of gold on the manifest may be influencing the decision. ![]() |

I was mistaken, the incident is from 1944. I had forgotten how fast ASW developed. Sonar buoys, MADs, wow, a Kaleun got no mercy.
