Default just a quickie question.....

although i try to play sh3 regular i wanted to know if you "ping" a destroyer would this give away your position? the only reason i ask is that i was approaching a convoy with scope down and wanted to keep an eye on this destroyer that was heading in my general direction at the time it was like 5000m away and hadnt seen me coz it was only doing 11knts, i pinged him and he didnt change course or speed but it did reach my location and depth charged me he never pinged me once

From my experince. Ive never pinged a warship so i cant tell if that reveal your position.

But they only ping you if they loose track of you and dont know where u are.

I guess they knew where u where, seen your scope or heard you. and therefor didnt need to ping you.

But the AI is not the smartest thing in game. I use to sneak into a convoy and lay at periscope depth and wait for them to approch untill iam in the middle of the convoy. Then i raise the periscope, pick my target and deliver the fish. Lower the periscope, reload tubes,, and repeat.

Ive had loads of warship swarming around in desperation and try to find me but they never do. Nor do they use the ping function either.

But i think also its a matter in what time period u are in the game, Early war, the warship tend to be quite stupid but later in the war ,when u encounter elite ships, they are much harder to face.

The game starts at 1943

Then I'll guess its not a smart way to follow him like that.

Use hydrophone instead.

its a lot safer.

-edit- like the guy said above. and also I want to add. when youre becoming close to an Convoy or warship like 4000 meters...go on Silent Rig.
my way of going for an Convoy when I have an Contact report

-Calculate Speed/Distance and go for intercept course
-head for the expected location
-Sound contact made. I Lay my trap
-Visual contact I Mostly count the amount of Escort Destroyers and their location .
-Choose the biggest boat (I,m not going to shoot a small merchant...I need some really good tonnage or else getting my ass DC's isnt worth it.)
-entering the 4000 Zone = Running on silent rig lowering my periscope...and sometimes I higher to see how far I am.
-entering the 1000 meter Zone = Turn speed down to 1 knot. Prepare Torpedos
-My target 800 meters away = setting TDC right so they my fish will penetrate the Engine compartment.
-Fire!
-I'll stay on PD for a while and prepare my 3th fish for launch.
-Ship struggling? 3th torpedo underway!
-Dive to 120 meters and later on I repeat my steps from Targeting - Prepare - Shoot - Dive. untill i,m forced to move myself away (Air - Battery) or when i,m outta fish
