Sorry to bring this up again. But I did a search about this but didn't find anything obvious -no green light!
I haven't played SHIII for ages as I've been so busy working on the ship sim...and also I put X64 on my new machine. Can one run SHIII on a 64bit OS? If not, I'm wondering if I should go back to 32-bit operating system.

I've installed and uninstalled SH3 so many times on either XP Pro or the x64...
I THINK I've gotten it to work on x64... But I can't be certain. I never did anything special, just installed normally. |

SH3 itself runs fine on x64, but the version of Starforce that comes with it doesn´t, so SH3 won´t start. There´s no official fix for that.

No oficial fix for that ,but Starforce not is a problem now,
the solution is in the dark side of the force.

Which brings up something Ive been waiting to say.
Subsim should reconsider its policy on this issue, and allow members to post the fix for this issue. I further support posting the fix on the downloads section of the site. Argument: Pirates all ready know about hack sites, and the people here who ask for help are legitimate bought their copy, sent their money to Ubisoft promoting the future development of simulations like this one. Ubisoft & Subsim are being foolish telling 64 bit gamers No you cant run our game on your system. Your money is no good here. Additionally, Windows next operating system Windows Vista is 64 bit based. Are we going to continue to tell Vista users, Nope - 32 bit only - go away. Rethink this issue, and allow the SH3 64 bit fix to be posted here at Subsim. Everyone will benefit. |

So does the fact that DW didn't put starforce or any of the other useless intrusive attempts at preventing piracy on their CD mean they support piracy?

Copying and piracy is a problem, and I can understand the need to take measures against it.
But when those measures stop legitimate users from using the game, then it just shows that the right solution hasn't been found. Perhaps the way forward is to have protection for a couple of years, and then remove it and put it the bargain bin. Alternatively, use something like Steam, or some form of online authentification. I was all against Steam when it came out, but I've been using it for about a year and it does have the advantage of not having to have the CD in drive. I also wonder about the future of Windows. Things have always been backwards compatible, but more and more we are seeing this disappear. Windows 64bit has not been so successful. A lot of people went the dual-core way instead. I bought my 64bit Windows back in January 2006, and so far, I've not seen any advantage from using it - only problems.

I don't blame Starforce for not investing moeny in developing a X64 version of Starforce, because Windows x64 is a white elephant.
I believed all the hype from Microsoft that said this was the way forward, but in fact Microsoft tricked us because they new full well when x64 was released that it would quickly be superceded by VISTA. x64 was nothing more than a testbed for there new 64bit system, and you might as well uninstall it and use the CD as a coaster. I'm going back to the 32bit edition. Apparently, when VISTA comes out it will be available in about 5 dfiferent variations, including 32bit and 64bit versions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista Jason

You know Jason, when someone goes out on a limb to help you, you might make an effort to not cut that limb off behind them.
Enjoy your hamstrung 32 bit system. |

And WTH do you do if you can't go to the net cos you used up all your MB? You know, over here in Yurop there are many places were you can't get a Flatrate. ![]() I won't buy anything that's got Steam in it or needs the internet to work. Ecsept Multiplayer games like Battlefield 2 were the internet is needed to PLAY, not for Copy Protection. Copy Protection is stupid anyway, What do you do if you want to make a Copy of your game in case the original DVD or CD or Whatever Breaks? In DOS times you just copied it and that was it, you didn't Resell it or anything. Only a Few did it and Were Criminals. But today, in the age of internet it's a bigger problem, cos Pirating is made Easier. Quote:
