Hummingbird?
Der Teddy Bar, I can not keep my boat afloat below 5kts, anything below 5kts and I sink, that really renders my silent running virtualy useless. Is there something wrong or is that what its supposed to do?

You are suffering the Crash Dive Blues.
Let me start by saying that the interrupted crash dive behaviour is a evident in a vanilla install of SHIII 1.4b, this ‘feature’ is brought to the fore by the NYGM U-Boat Mod. If you order a crash dive and before the u-boat reaches the crash dive depth (normally about 70 metres) you order the u-boat to another depth (higher or lower) then what happens is that the u-boat sits down by the stern at an angle of about 10 degrees! The only way to get the u-boat back onto an even keel is then to order another crash dive and of course let it complete. Due to the abundance of positive buoyancy that allows the U-Boat to hover like a Humming Bird this ‘feature’ was not seen by the player. It would have however made the u-boat sink or sink more severely when the stern of the u-boat was flooding but this is something that the player would have expected and hard to tell the difference between flooding occurrences. So if you order a crash dive ensure that you let the u-boat go the full distance, you can however change speed & direction without issue. 1. You can change speed after ordering a crash dive without incuring the Crash Dive Blues 2. You can change direction after ordering a crash dive without incuring the Crash Dive Blues For example, if I order a crash dive and as the u-boat reaches a depth of 15 metres then order silent running and a course change of 180 degrees, as long as I allow the u-boat to level out at the specified crash dive depth, then I will not expereince the Crash Dive Blues. |

Sober
I've been doing a lot of re-testing of the upcoming malfunctions files just making sure they're compatible with NYGMv2. There are a number of randomly loaded files which send the boat to various depths upon ordering crash dive. These are to simulate problems or malfunctions in the crash dive procedure. In many cases due to the increased depth the player will choose to interrupt the CD and will then experience these "Crash Dive Blues", there's no way around it so far. I also have the latest Longer Repair Times mod installed on top of NYGMv2. So far after running a whole lot of crash dive sequences the LRT mod appears to have absolutely nothing to do with affecting the anti-hummingbird effect in NYGMv2. I could be wrong but I've seen nothing to indicate otherwise...at least with this particular area of the mod.

Thankyou Hemmisent thats great to know that longer uboat times has nothing to do with "crash dive blues" . But if i install the longer u boat times again i will lose the anti hummingbird effect . Just a side note to ask if you think it is more realistic to have contact updates on as no one bothered to answer in my previous post .

how do I go to silent running at 1 knot to get away from the escorts, DD, the slowest speed I can get to is 3 knots on the wheel speed meter.

Just thought it strange there's an additional crash dive cell and the game has this strange effect when a crash dive is stopped. |

Slow = creep submerged or steerage surfaced. Silent running... 1/3 = 1/3 actual - there is a reason it is called what it is. It is a utility setting that falls between steerage and standard. It provides submerged depth changing speed, and surfaced no wake speeds. Standard = most efficient range setting for surfaced travel. Submerged it is what it is, which is kinda noisy. I will point out it is still quieter than stock 1/3 which was actually closer to 2/3. Full and flank were already logical and unchanged. Any other desired setting is a matter of specific desired speed at the captains pleasure. There is nothing to negate but the use of speeds settings that never made any sense. Unless you have a specific tactical or safety reason, no speed would ever be selected on the surface except the most efficient fuel wise, and that would be referenced as ahead standard. A table of the VIIB (stock engine) settings and results are here. http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze33y78/VIIspeed.htm Last edited by U-Bones; 06-18-06 at 08:59 PM. |
