Default R.I.P LT.Jr: Der HunterICX

4th Patrol 1939,

I had to go to Grid BF11, I could go around england or throught the canal, I thought I will risk it it throught the canal. after the 4th day on the ship I spot an Lonely Coastal Merchant. It was 12:11 I started to shoot her with my Deck gun, but I got interupted by an Speedboat from the English. I shot him with my deck gun but I supposed the Alarm has been sound. I heard multiple War ship sound contacts closing my position. 12:21 Finally I sunk the Merchant ship. but my men spotted with naked eye the 2 first incoming DD's **** , dive!!!!!

25 meters got 8 meters under me left...ow crap. they pinged me, they DC's me I had no chance to get away from there. I when on silent running and 1 knot but still they knew where I am...I had to distract them till night fall...but its was just 13:02 ..long way to go....I recieved the first blows....Hull down til 69% , 1 compartment flooded but I could repair it...Pffff...repaired everything my men could repair....at 14:36 3 more Warships Sound contact recieved....closing....How unfair.... at 16:41 they finally got the jackpot and destroyed my electric engines and repair was needed....but 5 minutes after that...they had an direct hit on my front deck that drowned everyone in my ship!

Arg. Sorry to hear it. Well, it's better to get it early in the game than later on. The channel (canal) is a bad place to be detected. When I get detected there, my policy is to dive to PD, and travel at ahead full for 10 minutes or so to really clear the datum. This seems to work. If it's a plane that detects you, run at PD for the rest of the day because they will continue to search in that area, and will track you. I'm jealous though of your drawn-out demise; mine are always instantaneous.

I tried cutting through the canal once and it was a harrowing experience. I don't remember the exact sequence of events, but I know I either torpedoed or attempted to torpedo a DD and that the almost instant reaction was bombers, torpedo boats, and at least 2 other DDs being vectored to my location. All I really remember of what followed was several hours of running 1x at PD and on the surface (whenever I could) to try and shake my pursuers.

If you are looking for more than the usual excitement following a convoy attack and have a thing for shallow water and narrow channels, then it is something to experience at least once

I had attempted it in a type VII but I particularly recommend it to the die hard type IX fans

The only hard time I've really had in the Channel was in U-48 ages ago before I had Grey Wolves. I was going into Dover and there was a large cargo ship leaving port. So I fired a torpedo and broke its back. The armed trawler that was escorting it somehow found my location and called for reinforcements.

*20 in-game minutes later* 9 destroyers at my location. Yes, 9. It was madness. I found it to be impossible to escape. U-48 went missing for the rest of the war. U-123 also encountered large numbers of destroyers after an attack on Portsmouth, which was a terrible idea anyways. By the way, my sig is getting out of date, I think I need to update it. The prize was worth it though; 3 tankers sunk. I may have even passed the wreck of U-48 on the way through the channel; who knows?

Size makes no difference. It's whether or not yer detected. For me the channel's all about surface dashes at nighttime and hunkering down at PD during the day, stopped, to avoid mines. I'm not really afraid of the channel. It's Gibraltar that gives me the creeps. You're never safe on the surface in the strait of Gibraltar. So darn narrow, the whole way. The only good thing is the depth, but I don't think you have the air/battery to go all the way through submerged. She's a real biatch.

Harr....running SH3 commander and playing the career of 1942 - 2nd Flotilla.
Spotted an Taskforce near Ireland. A lot of C3 cargo's !!!

running Silent Rig and I am at DP 4000 meters away heading for a Nice middle group interception (C3 cargos and tankers) The DD's can try to find me this time its 1000 meter deep

Saved the game , its late and I need to be fully awake when I,m going to sink some big Momma's to the deep Graveyard

Wish me luck!

Same here. In deep water, worst case scenario, you crash dive and have only depth charges to deal with but can at least try and evade them by maneouvering in the vertical. In shallow water you don't even have the vertical to work with, and also face the risk of being rammed as well.

The first couple missions in the war canoe (with 1st flotilla) that send you to the east coast of England I find very nerve racking. You are almost guaranteed to sight at least 1 DD (even at the start of the war) plus can have your location given away by patrolling aircraft. And then you have the worst of all possible worlds: a slow boat, shallow water, and not even a deck gun which makes you prey to even armed trawlers (an awful way to go, very embarassing).
