Default To Wiki or not to Wiki?

Well, a comment from MaHuJa started me thinking about putting up a Wiki for Dangerous Waters (edited by the community) much like the Wiki thats available for SH-3. The software itself is OpenSource and I could use the OrionWarrior webspace to host it (I hope you don't mind Smuook). On a further note I would try and tie the Wiki to the CADC database so people only have to register once (I think thats possible, read about a bridge from vBulletin to Wiki some time ago) at least that would be the plan from a technical point of view.

However, a blank Wiki by itself is of no use to anybody. That means the community would have to step in write stuff, and I would like to have a one or two people who keep an eye on the Wiki and help formatting and stuff (Wiki experience would help, but is not necessary).

Questions now are :

a) Is there actually some interest to get a Wiki started
b) Are there people willing and able to Write up information to post (don't have to be full blown manuals or stuff, for example if you know how to make a particular thing happen with the Editor like having the Orion on the ground at mission start, would be A-OK)?
c) Are there people willing to help keep it going (ie help in the Admin sense, formatting and things like that)?

If this poll clearly shows that interest is there and I have some names to get started then I will get cracking on the technical side.

P.S. : Do me a favour people, if you chime in and say you are going to help, please stand by your word, it takes time and effort to get something going and its definitly no fun to end up dead in the water.

Cheers

"A comment from MaHuJa" -- just now recently? We did talk about it back then, remember?

First thing, I would migrate my ffg guide to something I assume is a bit more stable than my own host.

A single login for all the services is a good idea; I hope you get it working.

I'll add to it when I find quirks (the type the thread you likely saw the referred-to comment in was about); I'll try to help "formatting" - presuming we're thinking of reasonably the same, at least; I can try help admining it.

But I'm a bit on and off so if you needed one person to "patrol" it every day I wouldn't be the one. And I can spend weeks on the "off".

I assume/hope you'll be using mediawiki?

I know we talked about Wiki some months back, but that was kinda different to that what I mean now.

I'm actually refering to this

And yep, my idea was to use MediWiki.

As for "patrolling", someone who would watch over it from day to day would be nice, but I would settle with a couple of people who feel responsible and at least look at it weekly.

So far it looks like there are some people who are in favour of such a project, but aside from MaHuJa nobody has stepped forward to offer some sort of contribution to the project, ie write and post down some of his knowledge.

The Poll and of course this thread is still open, so lets see how this turns out. I've forgotten how long this poll runs, but I put down a deadline of Sunday May 21th. I'll take a look at this thread on monday May 22nd and see what turned up by then.

Well, looks like albeit there is some interest there in seing such a Wiki come to Life there seems (as often) no interest (except MaHuJa) in contributing some help to the Project, hence I will put the whole issue on the Backburner and if I get really bored in the future I might (with a big question mark) bring this to Reality.

Yep, a Wiki just like Wikipedia (there is some opensource software called MediaWiki which I intended to use). The goal would be to create a Community driven manual just like the SH3 manual ( http://www.communitymanuals.com/shii...tle=Submarines ) where everybody could help out and add some nuggets of his own wisdom. Apparently, according to the lack of response to the call for help I guess that people prefer to distribute their knowledge (with some exceptions) just among the Fleets or Clans they belong to.

While there are some notable exceptions like the Blue Book or Kapitains Under Ice Manual some of that stuff was written for the precursors of DW (Blue Book). Anyway, personally I could live with a copy & paste job (ie copy from the blue book and paste into the yet to be DW Community manual - with some updating where needed), but even this seems to be to tiresome and honestly I just don't want to do the collecting all by myself.
